Gong played at the first Glastonbury Festival and were subsequently one of the first acts to sign to Virgin Records, getting first pick of the studio-time ahead of Mike Oldfield.
Gong continued, under the control of drummer Pierre Moerlen[?] and without their two principle members, because of contractual obligations.

This band lineup did a Glastonbury Faire concert and appeared on the rare lp from it (with the generator dying during Gong's set) and they also did a couple of other rare lps: the soundtrack to the film Continental Circus and backing a frech guy named Dashiel Hedayat.
The band by "Angel's Egg" Gong had a very competent lineup of musicians and the album is well produced and wonderful to me, and along with "You" I think this holds as the pinnacle of the "classic Gong" lineup.
He quit and the band went on to back Steve Hillage for an lp, then was taken over by Pierre Moerlen who released a string of fine instrumental fusion lps before turning into a shadow of his former self.

Gong was, and remains, one of the cornerstones of the genesis of progressive rock.
This version of Gong reached its apex in the spring of 1968, in the midst of "Les Evenements", the infamous riots that nearly toppled the French government.
Seminal French space prog band Gong may be best known for their pioneering work in the early to mid '70s, as evidenced by the indispensable Radio Gnome Trilogy of albums: "Flying Teapot", "Angels Egg", and the space fusion masterpiece "You".

Gong was formed around 1970, and at that time the band comprised Daevid Allen, Didier Malherbe, Christain Tritsch, Gilli Smyth and Pip Pyle.
Gong then after another split came back and recorded Angel's Egg (1973) and You (1974) to complete the trilogy about the activities og the imaginary planet Gong, and once again Allen left the group to concentrate on his writing.
In 2000, Gong, recorded a new album, Zero To Infinty, and this live album, is from the tour that followed in the Spring of 2000.

Pierre's relationship with Gong was a musically rich if personally roller-coaster one and he appeared on and co-composed two of their most beloved and accomplished albums 'Angel's Egg'' (Virgin 2007) and 'You' (V2019), both released in 1974.
Tiring of the rock world and leading bands, through the end of the 1980s and most of the 1990's Pierre toured the crisscrossed the world as resident 'pit' drummer for several big musicals such as Evita and Les MisŽrables before unexpectedly joining Brand X in 1997 for Japanese and European tours.
After two brief attempts to resurrect Pierre Moerlen's Gong Pierre was tempted to Russia in 2002 where he worked on what proved to be his last recording sessions for the album 'Pentanine' (label unknown) with a group of Russian jazz musicians.

GONG is a Space/Canterbury Rock group formed by Australian guitarist (formerly of SOFT MACHINE) Daevid Allan in Paris, France in 1968.
GONG’s second release: "Camembert Electrique" is the beginning of Allan’s ideas of Pot Head pixies, Radio Gnome’s, & Octave Doctor’s featured on later albums of "The Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy" along with the Protagonist Zero The Hero, which consisted of "Flying Teapot" (1972), "Angel’s Egg" (1973) & "You" (1974).
When Allen, Smyth, & Blake departed due to dissatisfaction of being an instrumental band this led Pierre to be the leader & released "Shamal" in 1976.

Gong realises they will have to change their manner of touring and concentrate on such events, which apart from the band will have visiting musicians, workshops, fire eaters, camping, staying in cabins, dancing, celebrating.
Caught up with Elson and Ziska (from the first Gong- It was Ziska and Gilli together in 68 who developed the whole concept and manner of "space whisper", but have never had the opportunity to sing together since) in their retreat in the woods, deer walking past the windows.
Catching the band in moments of lift off was not always easy,sometimes one musician was not feeling good, or feedback and distortion interfered in the middle of a peak moment, so it had to be just those few special times when everything worked together.

I often minded the farm for Gong whilst they were away on gigs, and I witnessed some amazing music from behind the scenes.
It was around this time, as legend has it, at a Gong party, that Robert Wyatt the Soft Machine drummer,fell out of an upstairs window which resulted in him becoming permanently wheelchair bound.

Guidance came from the 'mysterious green planet Gong and its inhabitants the Pot Head Pixies' whose telepathic transmissions were communicated to earthlings via the music of the Gong band.
The philosophy of the band fitted well with Allen's and Smyth's own wishes to break away from the stereotype roles of deified Artist and Performer that had evolved with the success of the Trilogy, despite their efforts to thwart that process with the use of multiple alter-ego's on record & stage.
This was recorded and released by GAS, the eponymous Gong Appreciation Society, and is testament to the continued vivacity of the music and interest of the audience.

Recorded in 1974, this is the apex and the crossroads of the band Gong.
One is struck here by how the band shifts abruptly from harmless, sunny-day pop music a la The Beatles (the opening two tracks) to an ominous, mystical fury a la Mahavishnu Orchestra ("Master Builder," and the band's masterpiece, "A Sprinkling of Clouds") at literally the bang of a gong.
If you've never heard Gong before, this is usually regarded as their magnum opus, and probably the place with which you should begin.

The band still has their fans, but for me I think they are a symbol of the excesses of the times.
Soon after they were joined by Mick Brockett who stayed with the band for most of its career as a "light musician." Their first US release was Remember The Future, a classic that rivals the work of the best Art Rock bands of the time, 1974, and went into Billboard's Top Twenty.

He then spent the rest of the drive explaining, in excrutiating detail, the complete history of the band and every project that every member of the band had ever been involved in.
Gong, it turns out, is in it’s 37th year of performing and recording in one form or another and through the years has included a pretty astounding line-up of talented musicians, including Chris Cutler, Tim Blake, and, well, a lot of other people.

The music of this band is damn near impossible to describe; to summarize even briefly all the achievements, conceptions, theories, mythologies and stylistics of Gong and its offshoots you'd need at least a hundred pages.
I mean, every band, at one time or other, chooses some kind of strange decision, but of all things you wouldn't expect a band as hip and eccentric as Gong writing music to a soundtrack about motorcycle races.
The band might have helped create ambient, but it's not because that was their intent - more probably, it's because they simply ran out of ideas and had no choice but to extend very few ideas over a very large space.

Not surprisingly, not because of the people they played with, but the name of the band of course, they cite among their biggest influence the French band Gong.
The influences range from world to psychedelic (in the Hawkwind and Gong way) to funk and jazz and the "real" songs are typically quite groovy with a few deviations to sixties music.
Although the music is nice to listen to a few times, the band pays a little too much attention to composition and too much time to being funny and like when you heard a joke a few times, it wears out and the album being as long as it is, it is quite a sit.
