  Gongyo History
This format was the standard for gongyo in the Soka Gakkai from the late 1940's to 2002.

Gongyo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gongyo can be done at a temple or at home, almost always in front of an object or objects of veneration and accompanied by offerings of light, incense, and food.
In Soka Gakkai International (SGI), gongyo means to recite part of the "Expedient Means" or "Hoben" (2nd) chapter and "The Life Span of the Thus Come One" or "Juryo" (16th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra in front of the Gohonzon.
The significance of performing Ushitora Gongyo at this time of day derives from earlier Buddhist teachings that describe the hour of the ox as "the end of darkness" and the hour of the tiger as "the beginning of light," and ones that describe all Buddhas as having attained enlightenment at this time.

That is why a standard rhythm had to be established, so that whether there were one hundred or one thousand people reciting the sutra together their voices would be synchronized by a common rhythm from beginning to end.
Today, however, people think that doing Gongyo rapidly like a bullet is better. When this is the case it is not clear what one is saying when Gongyo is not recited rhythmically or pronounced correctly.
Inherent in the rhythm of Gongyo is the spirit of all that Gongyo is supposed to be.

The most basic practice in Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is gongyo, which consists of reciting portions of the Lotus Sutra and chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo (daimoku) to the Gohonzon.
The version of the Lotus Sutra we recite in gongyo is taken from the translation Kumarujiva (344 — 413), the famous translator, made from Sanskrit into Chinese, and uses the same characters which are now utilised in the Chinese and Japanese languages.
Interesting as all this may be, it is important not to get absorbed in the symbolism of the beads or constrain ourselves with the eternal formalities of gongyo and chanting daimoku.

While there is reason for doing gongyo in Chinese and there is benefit to be obtained from it, there is more benefit to doing gongyo in your own language, such as inspiration, deepening understanding, and strengthening faith.
Even when doing gongyo in your native tongue, many people are so confused by it that they might as well be doing it in a foreign language.

A little over a year ago, it came to my attention that it was practically impossible to find an acceptable "Slow Gongyo" performance to assist new members in their desire to learn Gongyo.
From the responses I have received thus far, my version is the easiest and most helpful to use, so please feel free to send new members to this page to use it.
I have recorded both morning and evening gongyo is a slow format, and have also translated the sutra into English, so that one may hear an uninterrupted translation of Gongyo.
