Within the basal teleosts, the Gonorynchiformes belong to the Otocephala where they have been alternatively placed as the sister group of the Otophysi and of the Clupeiformes.
In this context, we investigated the phylogeny of the Gonorynchiformes using whole mitogenome sequences from 40 species (six being newly determined for this study).
The Gonorynchiformes and the Otophysi formed a sister group, rending the Ostariophysi monophyletic.

The diagnosis, composition, and phylogenetic relationships of the Chanidae, an ostariophysan fish family of the order Gonorynchiformes, are revised.
The monophyly of the Chanidae is confirmed on the basis of fourteen synapomorphies, nine of which are uniquely derived characters.
Rubiesichthys and Gordichthys are the oldest fossil record of the family Chanidae and of the order Gonorynchiformes.

We summarize work on this group subsequent to our 1981 paper, review the data we previously presented in the light of new evidence, and comment on the relationships of certain extinct forms.
The Gonorynchiformes is monophyletic and the sister group to the remaining Ostariophysi, termed the Otophysi.
Cypriniformes is the sister group to other otophysans; Characiformes is the sister group of the catfishes plus Neotropical electric fishes.
