Gonzales County, named for the capital of Green DeWitt's colony, was established in 1836 and organized in 1837 as one of the original counties in the Republic of Texas.
As early as 1890, 41 percent of the farmers in the county were working someone else's land, and the number of tenant farmers increased to 58 percent of those in the county in 1900 and to 64 percent in 1920.

As is the case with Goliad County, Gonzales has never officially adopted the historic flag associated with it from the Texas Revolution, although it is employed by both the City and the County.
The flag referred to a cannon given the inhabitants of Gonzales in 1831 by the Mexican government for protection against the Tawakoni Indians.
The cannon was eventually removed from Gonzales by the Texas Volunteer Army, who had to abandon it when its caisson broke.

Lindley contends "the Gonzales cannon was not discarded or buried on the Gonzales road to Bexar.

I photographed the Gonzales critter, we tried to net the Caldwell bug for a closer look but it was skittish and when it flew it was gone.
They were oriented generally downstream, but might be better described as oriented toward the rising sun (at least for this moment), as they were obliquely oriented to the flow of water by about 30-45 degrees.
The underside of the Gonzales Co. bug seemed to not have the dark HW stripe of Tropical though a hint is there; but did appear to have a somewhat scalloped edge on the HW; the Caldwell butterfly was not seen well below.
