Finally, the Goos reached the pinnacle of what could be defined as "stardom" with the release of Iris for the Nicholas Cage movie City of Angels.
A nice solo rests comfortably on top power chords (the trademark goo goo doll style) John's voice rises to a rasping, high pitched climax in the chorus, and the song closes with a short riff that sounds to me like it could have been done by an 80's progressive band...
The first time you hear a new Goo Goo Dolls album, you always dread hearing Robby's voice because it signifies a break in the flawless Rzeznik roller-coaster ride you were caught up in.

I bought this album when I was 17 or 18 and it was so bad that I through it out in the same bag that I scooped my cat's litter box out with.
This has to be the worst Goo album I ever heard and I heard all of their albums except their debut album.

When it comes down to Goo Goo Dolls albums, most people tend to be in 3 camps: flat-out hate the band, love the band but wish they were more hard rocking like their pre-Name days or the people that love them regardless.
Many albums today are a collection of one to three singles, and the rest of the songs are "fillers", or so-so attempts that all sound the same.

They've grown from playing "rowdy barroom rock" with "street-smart songwriting" to "arena level megastars" who write "energetic, pop savvy melodies." The truth is, the Goo Goo Dolls have something for everyone and it's time to unlock the band's musical vaults.

Although the Goo Goo Dolls’ most recent album, “Let Love In,” was released more than five months ago, people are listening to the album for the first time and finding new reasons to love and listen to this band and its inimitable style.
Although it is commendable that the Goo Goo Dolls have been able to hold onto the edginess that made them famous, while at the same time putting a softer spin on their music, that softer spin sometimes translates into music and lyrics that have become a bit tiresome.
This cover was a safe choice for the Goo Goo Dolls; they do the song justice, but it would have been nice to see them infuse a little bit of their own style into the song.

An odd pairing in retrospect, it was the Goo Goo Dolls' power pop with strains of punkish abandon that attracted the heavy metal label.

After 10 years of grinding the rock 'n' roll circuit, the Goo Goo Dolls finally hit big with their knack for the well-crafted, acoustic-based hit song.

Prior to "Name," nobody would ever have picked the Goo Goo Dolls to be stars.
So, Gutterflower, their first album in four years, was treated with the utmost care, crafted and polished on the level of a superstar release -- thereby giving a glossy sheen to a record that, at its core, is another Goo Goo Dolls album.
Now, the gloss is good and results in a very listenable record, but given the sentiment of the album, that's probably not what the Dolls had in mind when they made Gutterflower.

Right from the start, the Goo Goo Dolls sound perfectly on the right track after Superstar Car Wash's OK but ultimately go-nowhere feeling -- "Long Way Down" is another stone-cold classic of wounded romanticism wedded to catchy Cheap Trick-tinged punk-pop, Rzeznik's singing the not-so-secret weapon.
The eternal Replacements tag now makes less sense than ever -- the Goos have their own enjoyable sound, Rzeznik's a more individual singer than ever, and all three rock out accordingly.
