Goo Goo Dolls album "Gutterflower" blooms - The Villanovan - Entertainment   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The album starts out with an unusually upbeat song, "Big Machine," that could possibly be another single from the album besides "Here is Gone." Although the lyrics deal with the typical saga of unrequited love, they are anything but the sappy, melodramatic whines heard from other artists.
The Dolls seemed to have strayed from their typical sound, which consisted mainly of heavy guitar and bass rhythms, but this song incorporates more percussion instruments.
Overall, this release is possibly the Goo Goo Dolls' most lyrically uplifting, though it does have a signature downbeat hit.

They've grown from playing "rowdy barroom rock" with "street-smart songwriting" to "arena level megastars" who write "energetic, pop savvy melodies." The truth is, the Goo Goo Dolls have something for everyone and it's time to unlock the band's musical vaults.

CD Reviews: Goo Goo Dolls, Tom Waits, Weezer (NY Rock)
The Goo Goo Dolls really cracked though with 1998's release of Dizzy Up the Girl (spawning the smash hits "Iris" and "Slide"), but if you saw VH1's "Behind the Music" segment on the band, or if you live in upstate New York, you know they've been at the business of making music for many moons.
And on this disc, the Goo Goo Dolls seem to have hit the pop gold mine, as no song on the album feels like filler.
Weezer's new album has a dejected quality to it, in contrast to the infectious good-time flavor of last year's green album.

The orchestral-pop hit "Iris" (from the soundtrack to City of Angels) proved the Goo Goo Dolls were no one-hit wonder with 1995's "Name." One listen to "Slide," the crafty, yearning second track off their sixth release, suggests the streak continues for Buffalo's finest.
All the peaks and valleys of the album are spaced throughout the album, and this song takes us back to where we began with Dizzy.
The Goo Goo Dolls have an amazing energy/vibe about them, and besides that, their songwriting and music definetly messures up to what people need to hear.

 Goo Goo Dolls Biography
The Goo Goo Dolls were formed in Buffalo, NY, in 1985 by guitarist/vocalist Johnny Rzeznik, bassist Robby Takac, and drummer George Tutuska, initially under the name the Sex Maggots (the new name was chosen from an ad in True Detective magazine at the behest of a local club owner).
That sound was the reason the band attracted the interest of the heavy metal label Metal Blade, which issued their debut album in 1987 (known either as The Goo Goo Dolls or First Release).
The band's next album, Dizzy Up the Girl, was released in September, during the middle of "Iris"'s marathon airplay run, and sold over three million copies.

 Goo Goo Dolls Reviews
Having undergone numerous not-so-subtle musical transformations since their first album in 1989, the Goo Goo Dolls have matured into a powerful trio that seems to instinctively know its way around a catchy tune.
With vocalist Johnny's Paul Westerberg-influenced delivery and songs packed with exciting dynamics, the Goo Goo Dolls have really hit their stride.
However, the stride they've hit is probably not going to appeal to most fans from their punk rock years, and some may actually think A Boy Named Goo has more in common with a harder-rocking Eddie Money than, say, the Ramones.

The other songs in the album are also great, but this one in particular finally got them great recognition in the U.S. and the video was broadcasted by MTV all around the world.
But it wasn't until 1998 that they finally became really well-known all around the globe thanks to their absolute smash hit IRIS, which was included both in the City of Angels Soundtrack and their 1998 record, Dizzy Up the Girl.
Although most of their songs are great, this song was what really helped the Goos see the light of success, since they were nominated for the 41st Grammy Awards in three categories: record of the year, song of the year and best pop performance by a duo or group with vocals.
