LEN DEIGHTON'S 14th novel, ''Goodbye, Mickey Mouse,'' tells, among other things, about what it was like to fly fighter planes over Germany during the last stages of World War II.
But what is most intriguing about ''Goodbye, Mickey Mouse'' is that it explores a profound but little noticed aspect of war - namely, the necessity it creates for parents to send their children off to death.
Literally, ''Goodbye, Mickey Mouse'' is what a dying pilot says at the end to one of his sidekicks, Lieut.

Goodbye, Mickey Mouse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Goodbye, Mickey Mouse is a historical novel by Len Deighton published in 1982.
Set in Britain in early 1944 it tells the story of the 220th Fighter Group of the US Eighth Air Force in the lead up to the Allied invasion of Europe.
Another major plot line follows Lieutenant Michael Morse, nicknamed Mickey Mouse, who is racing to be the first American pilot to break Eddie Rickenbacker's record of 26 kills from World War I.

While Goodbye Mickey Mouse is obviously as well researched, it doesn't feel like a documentary, because the action is spread over several months, the research is presented less obtrusively, and it has a more complex plot which leads up to a veterans' reunion thirty years later.
Goodbye Mickey Mouse - the title relates to the name given to one of the planes and a discussion about whether a phrase like "goodbye" in a name is unlucky - is not really a thriller, centring as it does on relationships not action.
For the general reader, Goodbye Mickey Mouse is also not perhaps Deighton's most immediately appealing writing, though it would repay the effort required to read it.

 Reader's Club: Email Review
In the Afterword of Goodbye, Mickey Mouse, Deighton reveals that it took him six years of research to write the novel.
The wealth of detail that captures what it was like to be at war in England in 1944 -- from the fear and exhilaration of flying a P51 (Mustang) in air combat to the raw tension of nursing it back home on broken wing -- is brilliantly and sensitively told.
Told, too, is the sadness of days lacerated by the loss of friends and sweethearts, each of whom has been so expertly developed that the reader is haunted, long after closing the book for the last time, by their losses, their joys, and their triumphs.

The title character, Mickey Morse, falls for an older married English woman, and this threatens his dream of becoming a celebrated fighter ace.
The most intriguing character is the main character, Mickey Morse (known as Mickey Mouse), who grew up at a gas station in Arizona and is trying to improve his chances in life by becoming a famous fighter ace.
That having been said, "Goodbye Mickey Mouse" is one of the best books I've read for getting a feeling for what life was like on a fighter base during the war.

In Goodbye Mickey Mouse, Len Deighton has written his best novel yet: a brilliant, multidimensional picture of what it is to be at war...
His novel 'Goodbye Mickey Mouse' is not a great book, but it is a good book.
Deighton, in writing the book, seems to have been as interested in portraying the love lives of American aviators in England as he was in depicting the air war over Europe from the point of view of P-51 Mustang pilots.

Lawrence Lessig, a Stanford University law professor who supports the challenge, calls the law the "Mickey Mouse protection act." "Every time Mickey is about to pass into the public domain, copyright terms are extended," he says.
In fact, Mickey Mouse made his first appearance as Steamboat Willie in a cartoon that was based on the Buster Keaton movie "Steamboat Bill." In the days when copyright laws were less rigidly enforced, such parodies weren't generally regarded as violations.
Another tragedy of the commons, where that familiar mouse with the big ears may live on only in gilded captivity.
