Goodeidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Splitfins, are a family, Goodeidae, of teleost fish endemic to Mexico and some areas of the United States.
The speciosity of this family can be attributed to historical volcanic and geological disturbance in this region, which created suitable conditions for allopatric speciation of the fish

The family Goodeidae is restricted to the ancient Aztec domain of west-central Mexico.
The Goodeidae comprises a wholly Mexican family of viviparous freshwater fishes represented by 35 or more species largely restricted to the highlands of Mesa Central.
The first six or seven rays of the male anal fin are crowded, shortened, and often separated from the rest of the fin by a distinct notch; they probably aid in insemination.

If anyone has any questions on Goodeidae then fell free to post here.
Goodeidae are my strong point, I've keeped about 30 of the 45 (or so) species, some of which was collected from the wild from my close firends Derek Lambet, Ivan Dibble.
They are very interesting fish, unfortunately not well known by hobbysts yet...would you summarize here the basics to keep and breed them in aquarium?

Allozyme survey of 15 polymorphic loci in four Ilyodon populations from a tributary of the Rio Coahuayana, Jalisco, Mexico, revealed marked interlocality populational differences, but striking within-locality similarities between two trophic morphotypes which once were considered different species.
Abstract Karyotypes from 60 populations classified in 17 genera and 35 species of Mexican fishes of the autochthonous family Goodeidae vary from 24 metacentric to 48 subtelocentric-telocentric chromosomes in the diploid complement.
About two-thirds of the family have 2n = 48 with terminal or near-terminal centromere positions, a condition regarded as ancestral for goodeids.

ABSTRACT- Skiffia francesae and Zoogoneticus tequila, viviparous fish of the Mexican endemic Goodeidae, have been reported extinct from their one original habitat; the Teuchitlan River (Jalisco, Mexico).
We inferred the assemblage rules using data from the literature as well as our own observations on feeding habits and habitat segregation.
Teuchitlan River used to harbour thirteen native species, representing five native families, with eight species belonging to the Goodeidae and no introduced species until 1978, when the presence of exotic fish was first recorded.
