  Goodfellas (1990)
"Goodfellas" is one of the best films I have ever seen.
I am a huge fan of Pesci, and I tend to love his characters, but he really makes you feel sick towards his character in "Goodfellas," while at the same time taking a strange liking to him.
Anyway, "Goodfellas" has to be one of the best films I've ever seen--a true modern classic that will be remembered for what it is: One of the greatest tales told on screen.

  Goodfellas: Special Edition (1990)
GoodFellas makes it obvious that loyalty only goes so far; throughout the movie, virtually every character does whatever he needs to do to get by - screw the other person, no matter who they are.
GoodFellas doesn't exactly shatter that image - the focus clearly resides mostly on the males - but Scorsese does make a much greater attempt to demonstrate the female side of things and their perspective.
The prior release of GoodFellas came out very early in DVD’s existence, and it suffered from two strikes: it was a “flipper” that split the movie onto two sides of one disc, and it failed to offer anamorphic enhancement.

If Scorsese’s GOODFELLAS is not the best film about gangsters and organized crime that has ever graced the screen than I sure don’t know what is. Yes, there was THE GODFATHER and the overrated GODFATHER 2.
But GOODFELLAS is the film where Scorsese was able to completely narrow his vision down and depict the mob lifestyle with as much attention to the little details as possible.
The film does have a definitive sense that the mafia life is an appealing one in terms of the spoils it generates.

But it's even more outrageous that on the two occasions he was most deserving of that honour - for "Raging Bull" in 1980 and for "Goodfellas" ten years later - he was pipped to the post by two actors making their directorial debuts.
Based on "Wiseguy", Nicholas Pileggi's biography of real-life mobster turned FBI informer Henry Hill, "Goodfellas" is a tour de force that brilliantly evokes both the seductive glamour and moral degradation of organised crime.
Following Hill's rapid rise from eager-to-please youth to gang kingpin, and from there to his inexorable descent into cocaine-fuelled mania, Scorsese's fast-paced, violent masterpiece ranks alongside "The Godfather" as one of the most vivid and truthful depictions of the Italian-American Mafia.

 Goodfellas
While it may be premature to predict a similar status for Goodfellas in the 90s, it is certainly not too soon to recognize it as one of the most important films of 1990.
Generally, Goodfellas is concerned with Pesci and De Niro's climb up the mob ladder and its effects on Liotta, but Scorsese's rich tapestry is both broader in scope and more detailed than a mere recounting of the events in the trio's life of crime.
In Goodfellas Scorsese denies his central character the single characteristic that has made the gangster a viable screen subject practically from the dawn of cinema: his false tragic stature.

When I viewed 1990’s GoodFellas on DVD, it was as part of a Martin Scorsese “mini-marathon” in which I also took in 1973’s Mean Streets and 1980’s Raging Bull.
Women haven't played much of a role in most of Scorsese's films; Taxi Driver, Mean Streets and Raging Bull all clearly play from a male perspective in which women generally reside in the background.
Although the DVD doesn't specifically say it, GoodFellas appeared to be one of those "remastered for Dolby Digital 5.1" deals.

Martin Scorsese's 1990 masterpiece GoodFellas immortalizes the hilarious, horrifying life of actual gangster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), from his teen years on the streets of New York to his anonymous exile under the Witness Protection Program.
The director's kinetic style is perfect for recounting Hill's ruthless rise to power in the 1950s as well as his drugged-out fall in the late 1970s; in fact, no one has ever rendered the mental dislocation of cocaine better than Scorsese.
GoodFellas is at least as good as The Godfather without being in the least derivative of it.

Hill, who remains on a Mafia hit-list more than two decades after turning "stool pigeon", was forced to enter the Federal witness protection programme and take on a new identity.
It was after entering the programme that Hill wrote Wiseguy, later made into the Oscar-winning movie, Goodfellas, by acclaimed director Martin Scorsese, with Ray Liotta playing Hill.
The most exciting news was Hill's revelation that he is completing the follow-up to Wiseguy, which is expected to be the basis of a Goodfellas II film.

Goodfellas (also spelled GoodFellas) is a 1990 film directed by Martin Scorsese, based on the book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi, the true story of mob rat Henry Hill.
Goodfellas is widely regarded as the first gangster film to show in detail how the "working-class" mafia lived.

“GoodFellas” is the anti-Godfather, it’s tells the story from the street hood’s level whereas Don Corleone lived in a mansion.
Thankfully “GoodFellas” is among their first titles (just as it was on standard DVD).
