 Goodmanham - East Yorkshire
Goodmanham (Godmundin Gaham in AD 731) is a small village about 2 miles to the north-east of Market Weighton, and dates back to Stone Age times.
Edwin was baptised in York on Easter Day, 12 April AD 627, and the church that was built on the site of the baptism was eventually to be replaced by York Minster as it is known today.
The Church, much of which is Norman in style, is characterised by its stubby tower and walls some three feet thick.  It dates back to AD 1130 with numerous changes and additions taking place up to the 16th century, and is said to be built on the site of the original pagan temple.

Goodmanham was the Pagan High Shrine of Northumbria in AD 625 when Edwin became King of this vast tract of land which stretched from the north bank of the Humber to the Firth of Forth.
To the south of Goodmanham village there is a lovely wooded valley with a well-trodden path running through it and here, set in the southern slopes of the hillside.
Amongst the trees, is St Helen's Well, lovingly restored and cared for by the Girl Guides of nearby Market Weighton and it is to their credit that one can comfortably stand and pause and quietly absorb the aura of the sacred site.

Consistent spelling as WITHELL appears to have begun in Goodmanham at the beginning of the 19th century with the family of William Withell and Rhoda Stokes and this appears to be the only Yorkshire family line to use the spelling as Withell into the 21st century.
However the spelling WITHILL occurred in Goodmanham at the same time and it seems that some if not all present day WITHILL families may also be descendants of William and Rhoda Withell.
On 25th May 1791 William Withell of Goodmanham was married to Rhoda Stokes of Market Weighton by license in Goodmanham church.

This doesn't make any sense to me as Goodmanham seems very strongly Church of England, but then I don't think my Nan would have been mistaken about her own Dad.
