Goodnight Kiwi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Goodnight Kiwi was a character in an animated short used to signal the end of the nightly broadcast on Television New Zealand channels, from 1981.
An alternate version of the Goodnight Kiwi clip was used by South Pacific Television between 1976 and 1980 and saw the Goodnight Kiwi and his companion living in a television camera.
During transmission breakdowns, a still picture of the Goodnight Kiwi was often used, in poses including one of sweeping the floor and accidentally pulling out a power cord.

Kiwi are chicken-sized brown or spotted flightless birds, named by the maori of New Zealand for the shrill cry of the male (the larger female has a deeper, throatier call).
Kiwi have strong stout legs (the plural of kiwi is kiwi, much like the plural of fish is fish), widely spaced, they produce a distinctive heavy rolling gait, but can outsprint a human through the bush if pursued.
Kiwi are the smallest of the ratites, an early group of birds with no wing-keel on their breast bone, they include many large flightless birds, such as ostrich, emu, rhea, and cassowary, and the extinct moa and elephant bird.

This was a little cartoon segment featuring a thing which became known as "the TV kiwi", turning off his (or her) TV, putting the cat out for the night (apparently little cartoon kiwis own pet cats), and climbing a lot of stairs to snuggle down to sleep in a big satellite dish.
The segment was a couple of minutes long and was accompanied by the music "Hine E Hine", which is one of those sentimental songs everybody in New Zealand knows the tune of.
