In 1616 a hunting lodge was built by the Earl of Northumberland at "Godinwood", from this fairly humble beginning Goodwood House developed.
The 2nd Duke of Richmond began developing the house extending the house to the south, overlooking Chichester.

Description: Built for the first Duke of Richmond (he was the second son of Charles II and his French mistress, Louise de Querouaille), the original structure was incorporated into the present Goodwood House when James Wyatt rebuilt it in 1790.
Intended to have been be a large octagon, money ran out before it was completed.
The central porticoed and two side wings now contain a collection of paintings (including a number from Van Dyck, Reynolds, Stubbs and Canaletto), eighteenth-century furniture, Sèvres porcelain and Gobelin tapestries.
