All Google "handles" are suffixed with the letters -ga. While only researchers can answer questions, anyone with a login may add their comments to a question; the system does not differentiate between the comments of a researcher and those of a non-researcher.
Google Answers editors have begun attempting to discourage researchers from offering hasty incomplete answers so that they can get to more questions, but scarcity of questions and competition for them among a larger more anonymous pool of researchers have made that difficult to enforce.
The difference between the Google Answers' model and the public/academic library model appears mainly that when a librarian gives a patron a response to their reference query, the patron tends not to argue with her.

Google on their Co-op homepage calls the people who are supposed to provide content for Co-op search results "contributors." I suppose that's meant to be somewhere between users and developers; nothing casual, but no rocket science either.

This marketplace is Google Answers, or as Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page put it, an online "Question Economy." In short, as a result of Google's really cool experiment with Google Answers, you can pay to have your questions answered by researchers that are under contract with Google.
In the Google Answers universe, an answer that can't be validated is not a very good answer.
When you arrive at the Google Answers page, you can browse the questions and answers that are already on the page, but you must obtain a Google Answers account before you can pose your own question.

If no one answered the question on Google Answers, I was out a couple of minutes and the fifty-cent posting fee.
Google Answers gave me a nice option and allowed me to work on my other items and sleep.

Please note that Google's corporate communications department must review all copy (press articles, web copy, etc.) regarding Google Answers and/or your experience as a Researcher before it is published.
Perhaps Google just has its own niche that is fully separate from the public libraries, but I personally feel that we're sunk if people start to treat reference questions and interactions as if they were supplier/consumer interactions.

To join we all signed a contract with Google, one which, by the way, has a clause which not only allows Google to alter the agreement at any time, but also puts the onus on the researcher to keep checking to see if any changes have been made.
Once it's posted, all researchers see the question, and the first one to hit the "answer" button gets a one hour lock on the question during which they must research the question, write a precisely formatted answer complete with as many references as possible, and explain in detail the search strategy he or she used.
There are currently a lot more researchers than good questions, but Google is still encouraging people to post answers in the guise of comments by holding out the hope that if you post a lot of good comments you'll get hired as a researcher.

GA stopped accepting applications immediately after they started with it as they got 500 of their initial quota and after that they never re-opened it for more applications.
Google is very very strict in their answers quality and any deviation in it, puts the GAR in their fl list till they bring back the quality.
I hope this has given a good start for some of you guys to know what GA is. As RRK said, GAR gets paid for answering but they get paid because every question has a price that is put by the originator of that question.

I started noticing that sometimes while searching newsgroups on google and then clicking on results, I get a message saying that the article is not available and I should try google answers.
I'd say that the Google Answers promotion is for if they groups is unavaliable.

I suspect the key audience for a Google search assistant would be someone who is very busy and is gainfully employed.
Google is just copying the business plan of a few such services that ran a few years ago (don't know what became of them), and adding it's own trust factor.

 Google Answers Back Or How to Become an Ex-"Google Answers" Researcher   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In the October 2002 issue of Searcher Magazine, I wrote an article about Google Answers that was not overly critical, but not fawning either ["Information for Sale: My Experience with Google Answers"].
Of the two other Researchers who had published articles about Google Answers, one had been fired and then re-instated once he agreed to the errors of his ways and because he had "media affiliation[s]." His original article is still available online at http://www.geek.com/features/silicon/071702.htm.
As a side note, the Researcher Guidelines, part of the Google Answers contract with Researchers, will be updated shortly on the Answers Web site to include this addition.
