  SearchEngineWatch: Google Launches Catalog Search
Each listing will show the cover of the catalog, an image of the catalog page where the terms were found, and a close-up of the section of the page containing the terms.
Google is not charging catalog owners to be included in the index and says it will include any catalog it receives by mail, within days.
Google is aiming to update its catalog index on a daily basis, so new catalogs may appear at any time.

The Google Catalogs site, once home to more than 6,600 scanned (see MSN Cache), full text, searchable, and browsable catalogs is not currently available.
I have a hunch it will not be very long as Google is still asking merchants to send in their catalogs for free scanning.
Google Catalogs is/was not only useful (save a tree kind of thing) but also a great demo of ocr scanning technology that I would think has some place in the Google Book Search/Google Library Project.

Now I see that most catalogs are sadly out of date, with nothing later than Holiday 2004, and very few even that recent.
I’ve personally always been a fan of catalogs myself, but I guess the problem is most major catalog companies have their products available on their website too.

Google scares and confuses most of us, but I like to describe it as a giant OPAC with cataloging rules much like those we're already familiar with (even if those rules are different from what we're familiar with).

One of Google's least known services, Google Catalogs, was taken offline as reported by Gary Price of Search Engine Watch yesterday.
The technology Google used for this service was very similar to what they are using for their book scanning project.
They are likely going to try and take another run at it by restructuring their database (or would they use Google Base?) and upgrading their scanning equipment to make this service useful once again.

They have basically taken a cookie cutter copy of Google Book Search and made it search catalogs too.
