Google Groups - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Google Groups does not allow use of an invalid or obfuscated e-mail address (like user-at-domain.com), which you could use to prevent e-mail harvesters from retrieving your address from Usenet newgroups.
Google Groups honors the "X-No-Archive: Yes" header field, and removes messages with it (in the message header or as first line of the message body) from its archive after 7 days.
Google Groups is often accused of lacking security.

Google is beta testing Groups 2, a free email list service destined to replace its Usenet archive (Groups 1, which it builds upon).
Groups 2 shares login with Gmail and of course has a nice and usable design.
I created a group called Groups if you want to play and have a conversation about it: http://groups-beta.google.com/group/groups/ Server errors happen occasionally and I encountered errors using a private list and even spelling errors: Visit http://groups.google.com/group/groups/about to join or learn more about who is alloed to post to the group.

The Group may also highlight expatriate forums, such as for residents of a particular country or expatriates of one nationality, which are open to postings by anyone.
The focus of the Group is to cut through the hype about how wonderful the workforce is in every potential location, and help HR executives to make sense of their alternatives as they face difficult choices for business expansion, relocation, or consolidation projects.
Other Google Groups may be selectively highlighted here - such as news ones we may set up and manage in response to the interests of our contacts, as well as relevant Groups in which we may participate or believe our contacts may be interested.

Google has Deja's entire archive (dating back to 1995), as well as lots of material posted earlier, available from the Google Groups home page.
While the Google Groups archive is the most complete Usenet Archive known to exist, it is not a complete archive prior to the 1990s.
Some moderated groups are even distributed as digests, groups of postings periodically being collected into a single large posting with an index.

Google search - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Google is a search engine owned by Google, Inc. whose mission statement is to "organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful".
Google employs data centers full of low-cost commodity computers running a custom Red Hat Linux in several locations around the world to respond to search requests and to index the web.
Google reasoned that a valid site would progressively gain a natural link and content structure over time, and until the site could meet this 'trust threshold', it would be exempt from all but obscure search results.

Monitoring a number of mailing lists for interesting news on, say, [harry potter] or [sony aibo] or [housing bubble] without actually subscribing to what could be hundreds of mailing lists is a daunting task.
(And remember, Google Groups also encompasses Usenet groups - even more messages to scan!) There hasn't been an easy way to achieve this in Google Groups except for periodically searching for a given topic to see if there are any new and interesting posts.
The ideal candidates for Groups Alerts are those that might be discussed in multiple discussion groups.

Yahoo, Google, and Microsoft have all announced in their blogs that they’re teaming up to set a standard for sitemaps, those files that list all the pages on a Web site.
It’s useful for a search engine to have all the listings in one place so that a site can be indexed without anything being missed.
Note that Google also has its own sitemap generator, but a) it requires a certain amount of technical knowledge (it’s a Python script you install on your server) and b) its “last modified” note is sometime in April.
