  Google's Image Search
Google just seems to do everything better, recently adding image searching to its repertoire of search capabilities.
Since no search engine is capable of looking at an image and saying what it is, and since no one is willing to take the time to look at 150 million images to see what the content is, the search engine simply searches for your term in the file name of the image.
The search results not only give you a thumbnail view of the original image but also information on the image size and the Internet address of the web page where the image was found.

Note that when you submit a search for Google images, you are redirected to a URL starting with http://images.google.com.
Google considers a number of factors when determining whether an image is relevant to your search request.
Nevertheless, the same sort of technique should be usable to block image searching on Yahoo, or to prevent changes to the preferences.

Google Image Search works best when there are many images available to choose from, e.g., photos of Anna Kournikova, the most photographed tennis player.
Google technology isn't yet to the point where it can tell what's in an image by looking at it directly.

WebWire® | Adult Website Lawsuit Threatens Google Image Search   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Thumbnails created by Google Image Search allow users to identify information they are looking for online and then access that information—much like an electronic card catalog.
As certain information about images can only be conveyed visually, there is no other feasible way to provide image search on the Internet than capturing images, transforming them into thumbnails, and then displaying them on a search results page for users.
While the images provided by Perfect 10 may have limited academic application, the ramifications of its lawsuit could have a huge impact on educational research.

 Google Updates Image Search
When users search for queries such as [sunsets], [mountains], [torre eiffel], or [inverno] on the Google homepage, they may see relevant thumbnail images at the top of their search results marked "Image Results." When users click on the thumbnail images, they will be directed to the website that contains the original image.
Google Image Search also displays current news images and links to news headlines related to a user's query.
For example, a query on google image search for "earth" will likely show relevant news images and links to related news stories at the top of the results pages if "earth" is in the news at the time of the query.

Using Google Image Search | Dummies Resource > Internet & E-Commerce
Instead, Google Images uses the context of an image to determine the image's relevance in your search results.
HTML parameter associated with the image, and (most importantly) the caption of the image are the essential clues Google uses to categorize and sort image search results.
Of course, Google Images can't always do a perfect job, and if the contextual elements aren't present — perhaps an image is placed alone on a Web page without any text at all — Google has no way to determine the content of the image.

Coinciding with Google's recent release of the 2002 End of Year Google Zeitgeist, I have put together a collection of 40 discrete Google Image searches, retrieved and archived on September 11, 2002.
Each search word is represented by seven images (located in the top 15 of the Google Image index).
Each image occupies two interconnecting positions simultaneously: first as an autonomous image - a painting, a piece of text, a photograph or drawing and second as a component smaller than the sum of its parts.

 Google Image Search
I have a site www.matiklarweinart.com which has been in Google for a couple of months now, and is progressing quite well up the rankings - but image search has still not picked up any of the images.
Since the googlebot cannot actually view images that we view, it uses the alt="" attribute along with the img tag to index images and the same criteria is applied when we search for images.
This page: http://obviousdiversion.com/?p=100 suggests that the filename of the image is of far greater importance than any alt text and that, in fact, image search (at that time of writing - Sept 2004) was not very good at using the alt text.

Google Image Search has that "not so fresh" feeling? (by Jeremy Zawodny)
According to a Slashdot story, Google's image index is quite a bit out of date.
I could probably put you in touch with someone in business development at Yahoo's Image Search (where they have over a billion images indexed) to discuss a similar arrangement.
Google, on the other hand, a service I dislike to some extent, does not index my images, and never did, because it has - you know what it does have - a special image indexer.
