Google just announced that their chat application, Google Talk, is now open for public consumption, having previously been limited to Gmail users.
I know that the world over loves Google for their search, but I feel like most people are pretty dedicated to their favorite IM app, and if they don't have loyalties, they're already using Adium or Trillian.
Maybe Google is a day late and a dollar short on making *their* client the most important one around, but I don't think that's what they're aiming for.

Because Google Talk uses the Jabber open-source standard, it works with five lesser-known IM clients, including Trillian Pro, but you'll have to pay Trillian $25 for the Pro version.
To date, Google Talk might be handy for Gmail users, but other IM services with VoIP, especially Yahoo Messenger with Voice and Skype, have a lot more to offer.

Google Talk uses the Jabber/XMPP protocol, and that means you can contact people on any client that supports the service (Trillian users have to buy the pro version).

The advantage to running the native google talk app is the voice connectivity and how it integrates with gmail.

When not in use, Google Talk shrinks down to a "speech bubble" icon on the Windows taskbar (for the time being, it's available for Windows only).
In the future, Google says it intends to add a raft of new features, including support for other operating systems (presumably Mac and Linux), encryption, compatibility with other internet telephony standards, and versions with a user interface in languages other than English (text chat already works in any language supported by Windows).
Google Talk certainly doesn't enjoy the clear advantages over competitors that Google Search or Gmail had at their introductions.

While Google is busy cheerleading their openness and freedom of choice the closest thing to an open network they seem to be considering is pre-arranged formal peering agreements with just a select few of the large Jabber service providers.
Google is well-positioned to lead this charge but they appear to have chosen a different route.
Google fully supports oepnness and is only taking their time because they just opened a new service.
