 Google Toolbar 2.0
Whether Google's success is due to the size of their index or the method of indexing, in most cases I've found that Google simply lists Web pages that are more relevant.
Google also gives you the ability to highlight the search words wherever they are found in the text by clicking on the Highlighting pen on the toolbar.
Google assumes the more times a page is linked to other pages, the more popular it is. There is also a somewhat complicated method that gives more credence to the importance of Web page links.

Until recently, the toolbar was only available up to version 1.5 — and to some people, that meant upgrading was out of the question.
On a related note, the official Google blog also says they have fixed a lot of bugs in the toolbar for Firefox and are today stripping the "beta" label from it.
Google is about to release a new version of their toolbar which adds a few new features that some people might find useful.

 mozdev.org - googlebar: index
The Googlebar project was initially created to address the widespread desire in the mozilla community for the Google toolbar to support the Netscape 7, Mozilla, and Firefox web browsers.
While we are in no way affiliated with Google inc, our current release emulates all of the basic search functionality of the toolbar, allowing users to easily access almost all of Google's specialty searches (some of which are not yet supported by the original Google toolbar!) from one convenient toolbar.
Google, the Google logo, "Google toolbar", and the 'I'm feeling lucky' search are registered trademarks of Google inc, and the name "Googlebar" is used by permission.

 How does Google Toolbar work?
When you install Google Toolbar, you may opt to use the "advanced features", which Google indicates will have some privacy implications.
That is, the Toolbar will quietly inform the Google server of the URL you are visiting and the server will in return pass back some information about the page such as its ranking and category.
So, when I previously said "the Toolbar betrays you as you are surfing the web", I was just joking since the information sent back by Google Toolbar is not really that sensitive.

 Google as Big Brother
And given that Google is so dominant, it's important to understand the pressures that are being brought to bear on Google, Inc. It does not take too much imagination to recognize that there's a struggle going on for the soul of the web, and the focal point of this struggle is Google itself.

Google has a new thing called Google Compute that installs as part of the Google Toolbar (Google Toolbar is highly recommended for the Google Search box and pop-up blocker).
Basically it's no more intrusive than using the Google search engine and tests have shown about a 0.5 to 1% performance hit even in demanding games (it is the lowest priority task and throttles back whenever you need more power).
If you would like to use our Google Compute user ID, then after you install it, click on the DNA double helix icon on your Google Toolbar, select Configuration, and then change the username to "powder2glass" and press the "Save Settings" button at the bottom of the page.

 Google’s Popular Toolbar
HE Google toolbar, a thin row of buttons and a query window that sits within the Internet Explorer browser, has become a big hit, with millions of people using it each day.
Google's software is designed to unobtrusively alert users whenever a pop-up is being blocked by flashing a quick starburst of yellow near the user's cursor.
But, as Google acknowledges, if a person arrives on a page and notices that a pop-up has been blocked, there is no way to retrieve that pop-up to see what was missed.

 Google's new toolbar
For starters, Google's toolbar phones home with every page you land on, and tattles to Google what you're looking at, while offering up your globally-unique Google cookie ID that expires in 2038.
Therefore, Google is going more slowly for now, to see if they can start off on this particular slippery slope without too much clamor from webmasters and bloggers.

Google AutoLink: enemy of the people? | The Register
It appears that Google has some work to do in the area of security by making itself open and available to those who find problems like the Santy worm so that Google can more quickly, and even proactively, act to stop other worms and nasties that use Google before they spread widely.
I rely on Google to get my daily work done, and I think they generally try to adhere to their corporate motto: "Don't be evil." Generally.

 Google Toolbar AutoLink (kottke.org)
I'm a bit wary about throwing myself in the middle of the whole Google Toolbar AutoLink business (Dan Gillmor has a good summary and lots of trackbacks to opinions, pro and con), but I'm sort of dumbfounded that so many people are so vehemently against it...at least for the reasons being given.
But the main reason people seem to be up in arms about AutoLink is that Google is modifying the content and display of other people's content and that browsers and toolbars should not be allowed to do that.
But if you're saying that Google should not provide this feature at all and that consenting adults in the privacy of their own homes can't choose to use the feature themselves, I don't think that's a good deal for the users.
