 Simon Willison: What is Google?
Google has taken the last 10 years of systems software research out of university labs, and built their own proprietary, production quality system.
What I'm trying to say is if Google have invested in building what seems to be a scaleable networked operating system, implementing scalability at an "application layer" doesn't seem to make sense, when the underlying "operating system" already has (probably a better) a means to do it.
Google's GFS expects the failure of most components, including CPUs, memorys, disks, systems, etc--and in google's case nothing has to be replaced.

Google aims for Web developers' hearts and minds | CNET News.com
Earlier this week, Google introduced Google Talk instant messenger and an upgrade to Google Desktop Search, which adds a product called Sidebar that pulls data from the Net and serves up a personalized panel of information such as e-mail, stock quotes and news.
For example, the Google Maps API has spawned a cottage industry of creative "mashups" that let people combine information from a source such as apartment listings, and plot that information on a map.
In the case of Google Desktop Search, the company has released a number of plug-ins to the Sidebar tool, along with a developer mailing forum, as a way to seed the market.

InternetNews.com reports on some things discussed in Google’s analyst conference call on Tuesday, mainly detailing the search giants plans to create a medium-overlapping ad platform “that could sell and deliver ads to print, radio, television and streaming media, including podcasts and Google Video”;.
Google discussed injecting ads from one type of media into another, such as using dMarc to deliver audio ads in different ways.
Considering that Google’s first attempt at DRM handicaps the video too much, and Google is likely to never get the portable device support needed for a popular DRM solution, I can’t see how a Google audio store would succeed.

The video project really did start as an experiment at Google, originally developed on "20 percent time," the well-known Google policy of letting engineers spend a fifth of their time working on projects of personal interest.
However their problem is not Google but rather the fast development of Internet which gives them little time to catch on.

Google's move into radio advertising should create more opportunities for advertisers, but the value of those opportunities will depend on the company's implementation, marketers say.
Google began testing a program in August to resell print ads to its AdWords advertisers in magazines, and began placing client ads in newspapers last month.
While the move may be surprising at first, a deeper look shows Google's platform can potentially be applied to many kinds of media, bringing the same benefits of an auction-based, pay-for-performance model to other channels.

The post in question posits this: Google is a platform.
Not a "platform," used in the same sense that Amazon and eBay are platforms (custom Web applications that allow some programmatic user interfaces), but an actual computer/operating system/development platform—something I had suspected for some time, but I've never managed to coalesce my thoughts this succintly.
