Goolwa CFS (Country Fire Service) is a volunteer run fire and rescue brigade serving Goolwa, Hindmarsh Island, and the surrounding roads and countryside.
Goolwa CFS is a brigade in the Mundoo Group (Goolwa, Pt Elliot, Middleton, Currency Creek, Mt Compass) located in Region 1 of the SA Country Fire Service.
Goolwa has in the past run a Cadet programme.

 Goolwa State Heritage Area
The boundary of the Goolwa State Heritage Area encompasses the inner part of the Goolwa township and includes the wharf and tramway precinct, part of the town's early commercial core and the residential area to the south, known as 'Little Scotland'.
Goolwa's story includes the region's recognised significance for the Ngarrindjerri people of the lower Murray, as well as associations with explorers Charles Sturt and Collett Barker, but it is the town's history as one of Australia's most important river ports that is significant for its designation as a State Heritage Area.
The Goolwa State Heritage Area includes nine places that are State Heritage Places entered in the South Australian Heritage Register, and which relate to Goolwa's activities as a prosperous river port linked by a railway to Encounter Bay.

Eventually a decision was made that Goolwa would become the last point for shipping on the Murray River (it was located on the last bend before the river entered the sea) and there was a debate as to whether Victor Harbour or Port Elliot would be the ocean port.
The town of Goolwa had been surveyed as early as 1840 but it was resurveyed in 1853 and blocks were sold for around £20.
In 1987 the inner section of Goolwa was declared a State Heritage Area because of its importance as a river port from the 1850s to the 1880s.

Goolwa, from an Aboriginal word probably meaning elbow, came into being to facilitate the River Murray transport.
Some of the steamers and barges built at Goolwa were the Eureka in 1853, Kennedy in 1857, Avoca, 1858, the barge Goolwa in 1857 and the steamer the Goolwa in 1866.
Further employment was secured with the trans-shipment of wool from the wharf, which had been extended to nearly two hundred metres in 1878, to the railway for Victor Harbour.

Goolwa was the first non-European town to apply for acceptance as a Cittaslow.
A Goolwa Cittaslow Working Party, made up of people from the Goolwa community plus some councillors and advisors completed the self-assessment phase, and on 4 September, 2006 submitted a formal application for recognition, to Italy.
Members of the International Cittaslow committee visited Goolwa in March 2007 to coincide with the South Australian Wooden Boat and Music Festival held in Goolwa and declared Goolwa as the first non-European town to be accepted as a member of the international network of towns where quality of life is important.

The first railway station serving the township of Goolwa was opened in December 1853 as one terminus of a line linking the River Murray to the sea at Port Elliot.
The Strathalbyn to Middleton section was rerouted to run from Currency Creek directly to Goolwa and the line from Mt Barker Junction through to Victor Harbor was officially opened in 1885.
When originally built, however, the new Strathalbyn to Middleton line initially bypassed the Goolwa wharf area, skirting the northern edge of the town, and trains reached the wharf by shunting down a short branch at right angles to the river.

As is tradition in South Australia on the Australia day weekend some 400 trailerable yachts, off the beach catamarans and dinghies will join the classic Goolwa river boats on 27th January for the Milang Goolwa Freshwater Classic hosted by the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club (GRYC) and jointly sponsored by BEA Motors and Malaysia Airlines.
Now in its 37th year the event began with the aim of settling an argument between two local river boat skippers wanting a decent race they started sailed from Goolwa to Milang on December 27th 1966, little knowing that their challenge to each other was destined to become Australia's biggest freshwater race.
Yachtsmen and women have been coming to Goolwa for 140 years to participate in races organised by the club.
