When the lake is full it has a maximum depth of 24 feet.

The coal measures in Goose Lake Township roughly follow a line from the mouth of the Kankakee River to Goose Lake Slough, then west to the west end of the slough, and then in a northwesterly direction to the Illinois River in section 32.
Fifty-ton trucks were used in the later years of stripmining in Goose Lake Township to haul the coal out of the pits to Dell Abby, where it was loaded in gondolas for shipment to the tipple via the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway.
The "Northern" moved its machinery and draglines from Goose Lake Township, southeast of Braceville in 1950-51, and continued operation there until September 14, 1974, when the last coal was mined in the county.

The Goose Lake Trail is just South of Red River, NM (which is approximately 34 miles North, and then East of Taos), in the Carson National Forest.
The trailhead is located on the southeast edge of the town of Red River, off of SR 578, at FT 66.
The trail is just under 7 miles long (one way) and it takes approximately 2 hours or so to reach the lake, which is an excellent place to have lunch and to hide out from civilization.

 Twister at Goose Lake
On Friday July 4/2003 a little after 1:00 PM, a series of severe thunder storms passed through the Goose lake area.
As part of this storm system, a twister developed just south of Nechigona Lake and tracked east crossing Goose Lake about 2 miles south of our camp.
Although we were spared the twister experience, we did get several severe thunderstoms and gold ball size hail stones which did serious damage to our cabin roofs.

The original members were mustered out at San Francisco on September 24, 1864, but the connpany was again filled up, only to be finally disbanded at Sacramento on June 27, 1866.
