Gooseneck Barnacle. Who is Gooseneck Barnacle? What is Gooseneck Barnacle? Where is Gooseneck Barnacle? Definition of ...
The Gooseneck Barnacle ( Pollicipes polymerus) is a species of filter-feeding crustacean that lives attached to rocks and other hard surfaces in the ocean intertidal zone.
It is easily recognizable by its distinctive long and muscular stalk, which is edible and is considered a delicacy in several Mediterranean countries.
In the days before it was realised that birds migrate, it was thought that Barnacle Geese, Branta bernicla, developed from this crustacean, since they were never seen to nest in temperate Europe, hence the scientific and English names.

Gooseneck Barnacle = Pollicipes polymerus Description: The gooseneck barnacle is made up of two distinct parts: (1) the chalky gray calcareous plates of varying sizes which enclose most of the viscera and appendages and (2) the tough leathery stalk or neck which is brown or red and contains the gonads and adhesive gland.
To feed, the gooseneck barnacle spreads its cirri to form a net and instead of facing the incoming waves they take advantage of the water running off the rocks or the down-rushing water.
The name þgoose barnacleþ came from the sixteenth century writings of John Gerard who talked about the Goose tree Barnakle Tree or the tree bearing geese and he said this is where barnacle- geese were born.

Barnacles may inadvertently feed on their own babies when they are still planktonic larvae.
These gooseneck barnacles, Pollicipes polymerus, have the characteristics of the more common volcano-type barnacles (like the buckshot and balanus), in that they are also filter feeders, capable of living rather high in the intertidal, being hermaphroditic, cross fertilizers, and having numerous planktonic larvae.

All barnacles are filter feeders--extending feathery legs into the water at high tide to comb plankton from the water.
Mixed in with the gooseneck and the balanus barnacles is the most common member of the High Tide Zone--the mussel.
Mussels open their shells just a crack at high tide to feed, which allows them to circulate 2-3 quarts of seawater through their shells each hour--mucus on their gills traps plankton for their food.

Seaweeds such as the striking Sea Palm can tolerate heavy surf conditions by developing large and rugged holdfasts which anchor them firmly to rock surfaces; by growing in clusters of their own kind; and by developing tough, rubbery stems which whip back and forth with the surf, much like a rubber hose.
These mussels and barnacles often grow in close association, forming a distinct community of the outer coast shore.
The mussel and the Gooseneck Barnacle cluster together in depressions, their heavy mass creating further stability against wave action.
