Goosenecks State Park's claim to fame is a wonderful view of an incredible series of "gooseneck" turns (or "entrenched meanders") in the San Juan River 1,000 feet below.
Tent camping is permitted in the park's desert terrain and there are 4 RV sites in the gravel parking area near the overlook.
The park is located 7 miles northwest of Mexican Hat at the end of Hwy 316.

The current boundaries of Canyonlands National Park are the result of a 1964 congressional compromise and 1971 park expansion that drew the boundaries in straight-line fashion.
All lands adjacent to the park are BLM lands or state school trust sections, with the exception of those on the park's west side which are part of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
Canyonlands National Park was proposed by Senator Frank Moss (D-UT) in 1961 as a 1,000,000-acre park, stretching from rim to rim across the erosional basin that comprises the heart of the park.

 Goosenecks State Park, near Mexican Hat, Utah
Around Mexican Hat, the San Juan River is slow-moving and flows through a relatively shallow canyon with many wide curves; more of these convolutions can be seen in the nearby Goosenecks State Park, reached by a 4 mile paved side road (UT 316) off UT 261.
The park, to which entry is free, has just one extended viewpoint of several huge river bends, now flowing one thousand feet below ground level in a deep canyon with a series of stepped cliffs and terraces; this is recognised as one of the best examples of entrenched river meanders in the world.
Beyond this, the river continues to twist and turn as the canyon deepens, before joining Lake Powell after about 35 miles.

By the way, the Gooseneck of the Colorado River visible from Dead Horse Point State Park should not be confused with the Gooseneck Overlook in Capitol Reef National Park, or with Goosenecks State Park.
The Gooseneck visible from Dead Horse Point State Park is also visible from the Gooseneck Overlook close to the Island In The Sky section of Canyonlands National Park, but that overlook lies at the end of a lengthy unpaved road suitable only for fourwheel drive vehicles.
Because this is a state park, not a national park, neither the US National Park Service National Parks Pass nor the Golden Eagle pass can be used to gain entrance here.

It rises in southern Colorado, along the southern slope the San Juan Mountains to the west of the continental divide in southwestern Colorado.
The river meanders through goosenecks, sometimes meandering as much as 5 miles within a one mile straight distance, such as in Gooseneck State Park.
The river joins the Colorado at Lake Powell after flowing through New Mexico and Utah, where it is known as the San Juan Arm of the lake.

When there is so many other parks and incredible attractions in Utah, this park is easily overlooked as it is not as developed as others but it should not be missed.
Their orchards are still maintained by the parks department and are grazed by mule deer.
The park is open all year but for hiking, spring and fall are best, it is very hot in summer and you will need to carry a lot of water.

Among the national parks in the lower 48 states, Canyonlands is said to be the least-visited that is accessible by road.
A side trip not to be missed is the view from Dead Horse Point State Park, which offers the best vantage point for looking at a "gooseneck" of the Colorado River where it takes a dramatic S-turn.
That view is quintessential canyonlands and IMHO the national park should absorb this state park.
