Cooper was the youngest and perhaps cockiest member of the original seven Mercury astronauts.
Cooper, who took a nap in the capsule while waiting for Faith 7 to launch, was the last astronaut to orbit Earth alone.
Cooper became the first man to make a second orbital flight two years later during the Gemini 5 mission, when he and Charles Conrad established a space endurance record by traveling more than 3.3 million miles in 190 hours, 56 minutes.

Cooper's first flight assignment was in Landstuhl, West Germany in 1950, where he flew F-84s and F-86s for four years; he also attended the European Extension of the University of Maryland while overseas.
Cooper was the first astronaut to make a second orbital flight, and later served as backup command pilot for Gemini 12 and backup commander of Apollo 10.
Cooper also stated that there were hundreds of reports made by other pilots, many coming from military jet pilots sent to respond to radar or visual sightings from the ground.

Gordon Cooper and Alan Shepard, MA-9 pilot and backup pilot, visited the Morehead Planetarium in North Carolina to review the celestial sphere model, practice star navigation, and observe a simulation of the flashing light beacon (an experiment planned for the MA-9 mission).

Command Pilot Gordo Cooper and Pilot Pete Conrad with their "unnoficial" motto "8 Days or Bust" proved to the Flight Surgeons at NASA that man could withstand the rigours of spaceflight for the time it would require to journey to the moon and back.
Cooper was the only one of the original seven who settled in the Cape area.
Lots of Cooper's friends and family called him "Gordo"- but another popular nickname around the Cape area I'm told originated from their stenciled name abbreviations on the custom Mercury contour couches- thus, "Shep, Gris, Glen, Carp, Schir, Coop and Slay" were popular on the inside.
