  Clan Gordon
She was known by the English populace as the White Rose of Scotland, and afterwards married Sir Matthew Craddock, ancestor of the Earls of Pembroke.
His son, Sir John Gordon, was butchered by a bungling executioner at the Cross of Aberdeen, while Mary was compelled by her brother to look on at the horrid end of the man whom, it is said, she had once dearly loved.
Its remote ancestor was Patrick Gordon of Methlic, slain at the battle of Arbroath in 1445.

Scotland has a long and fairly bloody history, especially in her relations with England, and many of our early ancestors were deeply involved in these conflicts.
The Gordon lands, being in the Berwickshire border area, were plundered during one of Edward's early invasions of Scotland.
George Gordon, Earl of Huntly, was one of the major commanders in this battle, leading the left wing of the Scottish army.

Gordon was from a sporting family, elder brother Peter was an international colleague who won 27 caps and led Scotland 10 times, and father Jock was an international goalkeeper who also appeared in the Scottish Open at Troon, others in the field including that golfing great Arnold Palmer.
However, Gordon had the last laugh as Peter was injured in the match and was replaced at half-time by his younger brother - the first instance of a brother replacing a brother in an international.

Although the Gordon family in Scotland rose to become the predominant power in the northeast of Scotland they were not natives to that part or indeed to Scotland, and had a feudal rather than a Gaelic origin.
Because the Gordon family did not start as a "clan", it is often referred to as the House of Gordon, a name more tied to its Norman descent.
