Gordon Bell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gordon Bell (August 19, 1934) is a leading computer engineer and manager, an early employee of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) who designed several of their PDP machines and later rose to Vice President of Engineering and oversaw the development of the VAX.
Bell retired from DEC in 1983 as the result of a heart attack, but soon after founded Encore Computer, one of the first shared memory, multiple microprocessors to use the snooping cache structure.
Bell's Law of Computer Classes was first described in 1972 with the emergence of a new, lower priced microcomputer class based on the microprocessor.

QNX Neutrino (2001) has been ported to a number of platforms and now runs on practically any modern CPU that is used in the embedded market.
In 1982 the first version, QNX, was released for the Intel 8088 (additional info and facts about Intel 8088) CPU ((computer science) the part of a computer (a microprocessor chip) that does most of the data processing; the CPU and the memory form the central part of a computer to which the peripherals are attached).
One of QNX's first widespread uses was in the non-embedded world, when it was selected as the operating system for the Ontario (A prosperous and industrialized province in central Canada) education system's own computer design, the Unisys ICON (additional info and facts about Unisys ICON).

 QNX
Gordon Bell and Dan Dodge were students at the University of Waterloo in 1980 who both took a standard computer science course in operating system design, in which the students constructed a basic real-time kernel.
Oddly enough, one of QnX's first widespread uses was in the non-embedded world, when it was selected as the operating system for the Ontario education system's own computer design, the Unisys ICON.
As a microkernel operating system, QNX is based on the "original idea" of running most of the OS in the form of a number of small tasks, known as servers.

 QNX goes "Linux-like"
Gordon Bell adds, "Open-source kernel code may have its advantages, but, for the majority of e-devices, it's the wrong model." "Rather than burden embedded teams with the time-consuming-and-expensive-task of modifying and maintaining kernel code," continues Bell, "we offer a more productive approach: an OS architecture that can be extended using application-level tools and developers.
QNX apparently intends to be an active participant in any embedded and real-time Linux standards efforts that may develop, and also as a contributor to the open source utilities and tools support for Linux.
QNX is inviting developers to pre-register for their copy of the QNX Realtime Platform, at get.qnx.com.

QNX pronounced like "queue nicks" is a commercial operating system that runs on intel processors, mainly the 386, 486, and Pentium, and their clones, such as MD, Nat Semiconductor, Cyrix, and SGS Thompson.
QNX was created by the two founders and co-presidents of QSSL, Gordon Bell and Dan Dodge.
QNX 2 runs on Intel processors and clones from the 8088 through the Pentium, however problems due to speed have arisen on some 486's and Pentium's, and no fixes are anticipated.

 A talk with Paul Leroux
Dan Dodge and Gordon Bell first became interested in OS design as students at the University of Waterloo, where they worked on Thoth, one of the first OSs to use message passing.
In fact, QNX was the first PC OS to use microkernel architecture (1981), to support a hard disk (1982), to run in protected mode, to provide network-transparent distributed processing (1984), to provide built-in network fault-tolerance (1992), and to support a microkernel windowing system (1994).
The vast majority of QNX's core technology is wholly owned and authored by QNX, and the source that we provide is covered under our own licensing agreement, which gives developers the freedom to create derivative works without having to sacrifice any of their own intellectual property (IP).

"...QNX is offering something unique: a solution that combines the reliability and efficiency of a true RTOS with all the advantages of a true platform OS—low cost of entry, significantly higher productivity, and APIs familiar to a huge community of developers," said Gordon Bell, president of QNX.
The QNX Realtime Platform addresses these concerns through an accessible source model, where source code is publicly available for most modules, but not for those core components critical to the overall quality, security, and reliability of the OS.
