While the occupation that Gord Downie lists on his passport is "musician", he could just as easily have cited "songwriter", "poet", "video director", or even, existentially speaking, "restless spirit".
Such collaborative freedom is well in evidence on "Steeplechase" (a "simple song about complex creatures," according to Downie), especially in the cacophonous middle section that sounds like a cross between the ascendant denouement of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life" and the relentless din of The Velvet Underground's "The Black Angel's Death Song".
Downie is looking forward to taking Nudes out on the road for an extended jaunt this summer.

 CanEHdian.com: Gord Downie
As in a successful marriage, Downie is falling more and more in love with the mechanics of musicmaking- witness his increasing participation on guitar and veggie shakers within the band- and clearly wanted rejuvenation by way of exploring territory he can't normally cover within the parameters of the group's lineup.
Langlois and Downie work wonderfully together on this album as in their other band, and it must be said that without the pressure to 'be' the 'Hip, they turn in better vocal harmony here than anywhere in their previous catalogue.
It is very good listening: Downie writes lovely melodies when he doesn't have to belt over a rock band, which is no insult to the 'Hip: the two groups are opposite and complimentary sides of the same coin, and their legacy is ensured in Canadian cultural history.

Downie used his poetry — a volume of which was released concurrently with the album — as a springboard for this effort.
The resulting songs are literate moments of graceful beauty intertwined with sadness and bleak humor, a decidedly low-key release in comparison with the somewhat boisterous rock of The Hip.
Art-rock outfit The Dinner Is Served will act as Downie’s backing band and Julie Doiron will open, her contemplative sound fitting in perfectly with the rest of the evening’s oeuvre.

Gordon Downie is a busy man. For the past three years, we've been graced with constant new material from him --from Tragically Hip's excellent 2000 release Music @ Work, his absolutely mad 2001 debut solo disc Coke Machine Glow and last year's terrific In Violet Light, the latest Tragically Hip offering.
The great thing about Downie is that you honestly never know what to expect; sure, with some bands you can say you don't know what to expect.
For most, Downie was pegged as a Canadian arena rocker that had extrapolated his single "trick" over a decade, becoming one of Canada's biggest bands that, seemingly, refused to change.

Gordon Downie: Coke Machine Glow - PopMatters Music Review
Downie, in his day job as the group's frontman, is known for a lyrical style that never saw a linear idea it couldn't twist into a verbal pretzel.
The sounds are warm, the parts aren't overly complicated (the band heard the music for the first time when they sat down and then had only a few run-throughs to practice each song), and the songs stay true to their original heartfelt skeletons.
Overall, Downie carves out a nice, subtly beautiful niche for himself in the context of his career leading The Tragically Hip.

Gordon Downie - Battle of the Nudes - Stylus Magazine
ordon Downie is the truest form of poet at heart, the kind obsessed with the power of an absurd turn of phrase bringing intense new light to a banal situation or, perhaps more accurately, the kind that relentlessly spends their life filtering their unique view of the world into small fragments of revelatory imagination.
In the middle of their more familiar songs he’d throw out some of his most crass improvised lines that continually seemed far too genuine to be disregarded as a cocaine-fueled philosopher taking advantage of the microphone and an attentive, albeit ambivalent, audience.
As a collective work, it may not be as wonderfully obtuse and inventive as his debut, but it remains an impressive collection of autonomous songwriting from one of the most unpredictable musicians habitually ignored on the world stage.

Review - Coke Machine Glow by Gordon Downie
Without a doubt, Gordon Downie has a poetic spirit, and has at his command the abilities of a fine lyricist - but that alluring, by turns eloquent and menacingly raw voice of his is an integral part of his talent.
His original images and word-play, when bereft of the unique spin and layers of meaning which his voice is able to give them, do not fare as well when simply transposed to the page.
Even the most humdrum and ordinary of phrases will undergo a kind of alchemical reaction when sung by Downie: but mere concatenations of words, in simply lying there without discernible rhyme or rhythm on the page before a reader, as they do here, can only make for a prosaic and unsatisfying experience.

Perhaps more accessible and "mainstream" than his solo debut, Coke Machine Glow, Gordon Downie opens this album with the minimal yet evolving "Into the Night," a song that brings to mind "Flamenco" by his main project, the Tragically Hip.
"All of my heroes are women/And most of them are cinnamon," Downie sings, a possible inference to Young's "Cinnamon Girl." The singer's knack for vivid yet quirky lyrics is on display during "Christmastime in Toronto," a rather straightforward, radio-friendly rock track that borrows a line from Anton Chekov.
Only in a few instances does Downie head into a heady, poetry-centered milieu, especially on "Willow Logic." Alternating between his vocals and a person speaking on a cell phone, the song has a dreamy pop quality to it.
