Gordon Gano, MP3 Music Download at eMusic
With his band The Violent Femmes, Gordon Gano helped define post-punk's nerdy cool face of the 1980s and 1990s while also crafting himself into one of modern rock's finest singer/songwriters.
Gordon James Gano was born to a Baptist minister father and a musical mother on June 6, 1963.
When Gano's family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin during his sixth grade year, Gano started playing guitar and writing songs.

Tweak: Phone Tag - Gordon Gano
Gordon's lyrics are powerful and personal, often sung by an emotionally troubled first-person narrator — someone disenchanted with people, the society at large, and, most characteristically, plagued by a string of painful, twisted relationships.
Gordon, one of seven siblings and the son of a Baptist Minister, is a Christian.
Glenn and Gordon both agree that, despite lyrics that could make even the most cynical atheists cringe, their parents were highly supportive of Gordon's musical exploration.

Gordon Gano is best known around town as the lead singer of The Violent Femmes, arguably the biggest band ever to come out of Milwaukee.
Now Gano has stepped out on his own, releasing a solo album called "Hitting the Ground." OMC caught up with the man whose voice has become a soundtrack to thousands of teenagers' angst since 1981, when he could be heard playing outside the East Side's Oriental Theatre.

Two decades later, Gano was still the indie-rock artisan when he made his solo debut with Hitting the Ground.
Gano's selection of songs were exclusively written for some of his heroes, not to mention some of indie-rock's finest like They Might Be Giants, Frank Black, and Mary Lou Lord.
PJ Harvey is an uncanny match for Gano, for her wicked vocal stomp and distorted guitar work on this surf-styled number is equally fiery to his own sarcastic rendition.

Gordon is a devout Baptist and his religious beliefs come out in several V.F. songs.

Likewise, for all their variety, the guests Violent Femmes frontman Gordon assembled for his collaborative first solo album — including They Might Be Giants, Frank Black, Linda Perry, Martha Wainwright, Lou Reed and John Cale — all deploy Gano's unmistakable cadence.
Gano sings three songs on Hitting the Ground — "Make It Happen," which has all the fire of early Violent Femmes; "It's Money," a charming duet with Martha Wainwright; and a reprise of "Hitting the Ground," returning Harvey's favor with his own pouncing version of the song while she accompanies him on guitar.
Gano is one of the last great frontmen around.

The solo debut from Violent Femmes lead singer Gordon Gano, Hitting the Ground (August 27), is so star-studded that the nasally voiced singer could only squeeze his vocals onto three of the 11 tracks.
Though Gano wrote all of the songs and recorded rough demos for his colleagues (and in some cases finished songs awaiting their vocals) to work off of, only punk godfather Lou Reed got a co-songwriting credit.
Similarly, Gano said he wasn't concerned that his voice doesn't appear all over his solo debut, because his guests wont' likely hurt sales, either.

Gordon Gano: Hitting the Ground Aversion.com Review
As the moving force behind the Violent Femmes, Gordon Gano’s songwriting has been a perennial favorite of alt-rockers for almost two decades now.
Early hits like "Blister in the Sun" and "Add it Up" are staples in alt-rock radio, owing to the peculiarities of Gano’s oddball, nervous delivery and his band’s ability to make a sound that’s tough to date.
While this album’s been released as a Gano solo work, it’s not the traditional trip down solo side-project lane, as, although each song on the record was penned by the head Femme himself, he only steps in to record a mere three tracks on his own.

Gordan Gano's amazing ability to sound both geniunely sad and geniunely insane at the same time is one of their unique characteristics, and the multi-talented Brian Ritchie brings all sorts of new and fresh musical expressions.
Writer/guitarist/vocalist Gordon Gano not only gave words to his sexual (and other) angst, but performed on record and in concert as though the emotions were gripping him at that very moment.

While not as bizarre as the Holy Modal Rounders, and not as mocking as Gordon Gano's vocals would imply (despite echoes of Jonathan Richman's juvenile dementia), their songs were unorthodox and their rhythms were the antithesis of "traditional" (Brian Ritchie on bass and Victor DeLorenzo on drums).

Preaching to the choir: The Violent Femmes, including Gordon Gano, center, are set to perform Sept. 7 at the Mystic Theater in Petaluma.
TO SAY that the Violent Femmes--who blend choppy guitars and bare-bones arrangements, punchy riffs, and self-effacing lyrics with often Captain Beefheartesque experimentalism--have had an up-and-down career is an understatement.
Gano, the son of a preacher, has flirted with Christian messages in such tunes as "Country Death Song" and "Jesus Walking on the Water," a seeming contradiction to his penchant for penning teen anthems dealing with masturbation, rebellion, and chicks ("36-24-36").

Gano knows his stuff--the barely electric music is striking enough for rock and roll.
No deep thinker and probably a jerk, Gordon Gano is the good-looking cad in a collegiate picaresque, putting himself across on feckless charm and endless libido.

Respectively the son of a Baptist minister and the grandson of a preacher, Gano and Edwards share concerns in the Bible.
Gano's way of declaiming results probably more from a dramatization of his characters than from a profession of faith.
Gano, in turn, qualifies that relationship: "There's a recurring fantasy about us: our songs are said to convey the atmospheres of Faulkner, Caldwell, Carson MacCullers or Flannery O'Connor, who I'm quite fond of by the way.

Some time ago I was excited to hear that I was to be granted an interview with the frontman of one of my all time favourite bands – Violent Femmes, by email admittedly, but this was just as exciting to me as any other way.
As a result, it was a wait of several weeks before my questions were answered, and, taking PR to a new level, Joolz at Cooking Vinyl typed up his handwritten replies for me. Thanks Joolz, it was worth the wait, as here is the complete interview for our readers’ delectation.
It begins: ‘Gordon Gano’s voice will clear out a room faster than a methane explosion.” Or at least that’s what I remember it saying.
