Gordon Jacob - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jacob's first major successful piece was composed during his student years: the William Byrd Suite for orchestra, after a collection of pieces for the virginal.
Jacob was one of the most musically conservative of his generation of composers.
Jacob was highly prolific and published over 700 pieces of music before his death in 1984, in addition to his four books and numerous essays on music.

GORDON JACOB (1895 – 1984) By Dr Geoff Ogram - Feb 2004 MusicWeb(UK)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Gordon was in fact grateful that his devotion to music was accepted without challenge by the school and "not considered effeminate, even in those far-off days," as he once expressed it.
Jacob composed one original ballet (Uncle Remus) during that period, but his major contribution was in his orchestral arrangements for new ballets based upon the works of such diverse composers as Liszt, Adam, Couperin, Lecocq and others, as well as new orchestrations for established works, like Les Sylphides.
Jacob's offerings rather outshone the efforts of the other composers and arrangers, but some of the more pompous members of the musical establishment looked upon Jacob's ITMA activities with suspicion and disapproval, as if he were besmirching the name of "serious" music.

DR V4.3: Oboe and English Horn Works of Gordon Jacob   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Gordon Jacob regards the Quartet for Oboe and Strings as one of his finest works; reviews of its first and successive performances by Leon Goossens established it as one of the major accomplishments of Jacob's solo and ensemble compositions for oboe and English horn.
The first movement of Jacob's concerto is based on the concerto-grosso form of Handel and the Italian composers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; [6] Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713), Antonio Vivaldi (1669-1741) and Giuseppi Torelli (1658-1709).
Jacob's distinctiveness is the result not only of his use, or of his expansion of such forms, but of the manner in which they are used and expanded.

Gordon Jacob - Four Fancies, for flute and strings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The composer, conductor and arranger Gordon Jacob played a distinguished role in British musical life for nearly three-quarters of the twentieth century, composing over 700 works between 1922 and his death at the age of 89.
The sheer quantity and variety of Jacob’s output has made it difficult to date many of his smaller works, and the precise date of these Four Fancies is unknown.
Whatever their provenance, these four miniatures have all the qualities that distinguish the whole of Jacob’s output – fresh, tuneful, and written with absolute understanding of the colours and characteristics of the four instruments.

Gordon Jacob (1895-1984), in common with the generation of British composers that includes Vaughan Williams, Ireland, Howells, Bax and so on, studied with Charles Villiers Stanford; however, any resemblance between his music and that of those composers ends there.
Far from the lush, overt Romanticism of his elders, his writing is more simple and sparse, inspired partly by Baroque and Classical models (some of the works under his name are in fact arrangements of Baroque music), sometimes angular and dissonant but never inaccessible.
Jacob had a special affinity for wind instruments, for which he composed a large body of concerti and chamber music, including the Trio for clarinet, viola and piano, written in 1969.
