Gordon Jago MBE, (born October 22, 1932 in London, England), is a former soccer coach for the United States national soccer team in 1969 and has coached English clubs Millwall and the Queens Park Rangers (from 1970-1975).
In his short stint as head coach of the National team, Jago had a record of 0-2.
Jago has also coached NASL teams, the Baltimore Bays and the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Jago assumed the head coaching duties when Billy Phillips was fired on January 28, 1991.
Jago retired as Head Coach after the 1997 season, and became President of the World Indoor Soccer League from 1998 until the merger with the new-MISL for the 2002-03 season.

Henry Gordon Jago is a well-loved Holmes creation, but his alliteration rather grates on me, and he doesn’t really get a chance to be anything but pompous until the final episode.
Jago and Litefoot and also written in a way that attempts to sell them off as charming, while Chang is dry and humourless, and ultimately gullible.
Jago is thus that bravest of people, someone who is afraid but overcomes it to act bravely when he needs to.

Christopher Benjamin is equally good as the flamboyant Jago whose theatrical exuberance hides his natural cowardice and he's very touching in the last episode when he's allowed to become a pleasingly unlikely hero.
When they finally get together in the last third of the story, they have instant chemistry and are enough fun to make one regret that a mooted spin-off for their characters never got off the ground.

His never-ending barrage of adjectives revealed an amusing and curious character those real flaws and subsequent strengths were revealed: "I'm not so bally brave when it comes to it." I enjoyed his character immensely, especially when teamed up with the Doctor and/or Litefoot.
While this may be the worst adaptation of Phantom I've ever seen, one thing it didn't lack was atmosphere--an atmosphere I find mirrored in "Weng-Chiang," particularly in the river scenes and under the theatre.
