Gordon Jenkins was born in Webster Groves, Missouri in 1910.
The Gordon Jenkins version of the tune from the 1941 play Pal Joey lasted for 18 weeks on the hit parade and reached the number six position.
The Weavers were reportedly brought to Decca records by Jenkins with the idea of combining their vocal style to that of the big orchestra and chorus.

Jenkins soon became Decca's musical director, and was responsible for bringing The Weavers (a group that included Pete Seeger among its members) to Decca.
Jenkins worked again with Sinatra as arranger and conductor of the 1965 album September Qf My Years, which included Jenkins's classic song "This Is All I Ask", and for which his arrangement of Ervin Drake's "It Was a Very Good Year" won him a Grammy.
Gordon Jenkins died in Malibu, California on April 24, 1984 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gerhig's disease).

In 1938, Jenkins moved to Hollywood and worked for Paramount Pictures and NBC, and then became Dick Haymes' arranger for four years.
By 1949, Jenkins was musical director at Decca, and he signed -- despite resistance from Decca's management -- the Weavers, a Greenwich Village folk ensemble that included Pete Seeger among its members.
In November of 2005, Gordon's son Bruce (a sports columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle) published a biography titled "Goodbye".

Jenkins retired from the Army Reserve as a Major.

A distinguished songwriter, arranger and conductor, as a child Jenkins occasionally played organ at the Chicago movie theatre where his father was the regular organist.
In 1949 Jenkins was back in New York, working on the score for the Broadway show Along Fifth Avenue, and at the Capitol and Paramount theatres.
In 1952 Jenkins wrote the score for Bwana Devil, the first 3-D feature film, and, through the years, accompanied many top artists on record, such as Martha Tilton, Louis Armstrong and Peggy Lee.
