Marsden, who is a former editor of History Today, has been convening an informal advisory group to make recommendations about the history curriculum to Education Ministers and officials as part of the post-Tomlinson report review of 14-19 education.

Marsden, a former history teacher, argues in an essay to be published by think tank the Fabian Society this week, that the over-emphasis on the Third Reich risks a 'Hitlerisation of history', with some pupils covering the same period two or three times if they go on to A-level.
Linda Colley, a historian who has lectured distinguished audiences at Downing Street, argues in her essay that too great a focus on the world wars 'encourages the idea that Germany has always been our enemy', whereas exploring 19th-century history would show how closely allied the two countries were for a long time.
Marsden said the fascination with genealogy and TV programmes such as Who Do You Think You Are?, in which celebrities traced their family trees, showed a keen national interest in history.

The number of openly gay or lesbian Members of Britain's House of Commons increased by 50% this week as first David Borrow (Ribble South) and then Gordon Marsden (Blackpool South) identified themselves to their local newspapers as gay men.
The Labour MPs' announcements were sparked by the upcoming June 22 vote to lower the age of consent for male-male sex acts from its current 18 years to equalize it with the age of consent for other sex acts at 16 years.
Marsden, long an advocate for gays and lesbians and formerly a historian, lives with a partner he met a dozen years ago, identified only as "Richard." He said on June 10, "Many people in Blackpool already know -- I believe my constituents have the right too.

Leading historians and politicians taking part in the conference 'history lessons' debate supported the emerging consensus to put a new British narrative at the heart of the school history curriculum as long as it was an honest 'warts and all' portrayal which did not duck the negative aspects of Britain's global history.
Gordon Brown's keynote speech had supported a new British narrative in history and citizenship, while disagreeing with criticisms of an excessive focus on Nazi Germany and the second world war in school history.
