Gordon Raphael is a throwback to a rougher, more viscerally exciting era of rock music.
Raphael’s studio, Transporterraum 2 (the first Transporterraum was in Manhattan on East 2nd Street and Avenue A, preceded by his equally scruffy Chateau Relaxo studio a few blocks away) is relatively tiny.
Raphael realized that, while tape was a crucial component of the classic rock sound, its use was not optional 30 years ago.

Growing up in Seattle, Washington, Gordon Raphael fell in love with an ARP Odyssey synthesizer when he was in high school, and so began his pursuit of a career in music.
In 1986, Gordon Raphael moved into a 1927 Seattle church which had a recording studio in the basement and a giant stage on top, with a view to making this a cultural centre for local musicians as well as the HQ for a record label.
Raphael loved the inherent innovation of the work samples that Schneider brought with him, and the result was that the latter's band Vandermeer wound up recording an album at Chateau Relaxo.

All of which is good for assuring Raphael's happiness as a producer and engineer, as well as an indie label owner (www.shoplifterrecords.co.uk).
To set the mood for the sessions, Raphael oversaw extensive decorations in the studio, which included psychedelic lighting, purple velvet drapes and a massive ceiling-mounted disco ball.
Raphael knew from the first time around that, contrary to their image as nonchalant East Village slackers, The Strokes would be extremely exacting about the sound and placement of every note, beat and slice of space on the record.

When Gordon Raphael found Regina Spektor, he was neither in the market nor in the mood.
It was Christmas 2002, and Raphael, a record producer whose most famous client is the Strokes, had just moved to London, where he was coming off a busy year working with upward of 30 bands.
He hired a string section and the punk band Kill Kenada to play on "Soviet Kitsch" - a clue to the idiosyncratic nature of this collection, which includes such titles as "Ode to Divorce," "Carbon Monoxide" and "Chemo Limo." Track seven, "* * *," is a whispered exchange between the artist and her brother.

Having gone with Godrich over Raphael would have had that tinge of betrayal, so for now the band seems to be making all the right strategic overtures.

Amazon.com: He Can Go You Can't Stay: Music: Singles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Jim Diamond seems to be a more familiar name than Gordon Raphael these days, the Gories/Dirtbombs legend popping up more often than the proverbial jack in the box.
He's got a far better strike rate than Raphael though, and whether that's because the acts he works with are more fully formed is a moot point, they're certainly more fully formed when he leaves their company.
The Singles are a case in point, they hail from Detroit (of course) but they don't go in for all that sub-swamp blues/garage malarkey, rather they prefer to batter their way around a seam of power-pop that's more rock than roll.
