 Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online
Gordon considered the appointments his prerogative, and he made them, according to Smith, “in violation to what we consider the rights of the people.” Smith insisted to Tilley that decisive action must be taken to protect “the dignity of our own position.” Gordon never appreciated this concern.
Gordon continuously pressed Smith to pursue a union policy that would be acceptable to the imperial authorities, the Canadians, and the majority of New Brunswickers.
The fact that his replacement, Arthur Hamilton Gordon*, was a high-strung young aristocrat was ominous, however, and the American Civil War threatened to disrupt affairs in New Brunswick, especially if it led to increased public expenditures on the militia and the Intercolonial Railway, both of which Smith opposed.

H-Net Review: Gordon L. Barnhart on Rogue Tory: Life and Legend of John G. Diefenbaker
A professor of political science at the University of Western Ontario whose previous publications include a biography of Walter Gordon, Denis Smith was born and raised on the prairies and, as a young person, was introduced to Diefenbaker.
This biography of Diefenbaker shows him as a man, a defence lawyer, and a politician.
Denis Smith's biography of Diefenbaker, Dief the Chief as he was often called by his friends, is a balanced picture of this embattled Prime Minister.

death with dignity * gordon smith, not a poll-taking politician?
Portland, OR --- In today’s Oregonian, Senator Gordon Smith said he was “not a poll-taking politician” when the issue of his opposition to Oregon’s Death with Dignity law was questioned.
Gordon Smith has the amazing misfortune of polling me on how he should respond to his opposition to death with dignity,” as Board President for Oregon Death with Dignity, the advocacy organization that passed the law, Stutsman has done more polling on this issue than perhaps any other person in Oregon.
Smith’s personal opposition to the issue should not be the issue – we always respect a person’s personal views – but the fact he actively works against the citizens of his state in Congress and supports John Ashcroft’s effort to overturn the law, that should be a problem for Oregon voters,” Stutsman added.

 The Kidnapping of Adam Smith
Smith has no problem with large companies with large profits, so long as they realise they exist within the paradigm of the customer is king.
By some strange providence, the Adam Smith Institute runs a site called Tax Freedom Day which calculates the equivalent day of the year in which the average British taxpayer starts earning money for his own use and not that of the government.
Neither must we forget the government-granted monopoly of the East India Company and the abuses and inefficiencies that arose from that (Smith suggests their incompetence turned a Bengali dearth into a famine).

It was a bad moment to be an ambitious Labour politician; but Blair allied himself with Neil Kinnock, the new leader of the party, and quickly moved up the hierarchy.

It was only the heart attack that killed his predecessor, the much-loved Scots lawyer John Smith, that created a vacancy in the leadership of the party.

 The Deal (2003) (TV)
David Morrissey, as Brown, is less convincing than when given free rein to play a fictional politician as he did recently in 'State of Play'; Michael Sheen, as Blair, is always just a little bit more callow and hollow than the real thing.
But politicians make deals all the time with one another - and had we not a media obsessed with political minutiae, that history might well have been forgotten.
There are a few nice touches (Blair's instinctive family values, Brown's genuine grief at John Smith's death) but 'The Deal' still feels like a compilation of yesterday's newspapers.

In 1994, following the sudden death of John Smith (1938-94) as the result of a heart attack, Blair was selected as Labour's youngest-ever Party Leader, ahead of rival Gordon Brown (b.1951).
Blair built on Smith's efforts to modernise his party and restore its appeal to mainstream voters, who had deserted Labour as it drifted to the left, resulting in its defeat at the polls in 1979.
