The arrival of the Scottish Parliament revived his political passion, though he considered that most MSPs were "too comfortable for the good of themselves and their country".
He was one of a declining number of politicians who have held the unusual distinction of being twice elected to Westminster inside a year.
Leader of the Scottish National Party, Alex Salmond MP, commented: "Douglas Henderson was hugely influential as a trail blazer for SNP success in the North-east of Scotland and along with Winnie Ewing and Hamish Watt created the bridge head by winning East Aberdeenshire which lead eventually to SNP domination in that part of Scotland.

It’s clear that the Scottish people did not want it and there was many petitions sent to the Scottish Parliament against the union, and there were massive protests in Edinburgh and several other Scottish towns on the day it was passed.
Gordon (67) - if the poll was carried out in the Central Belt then it's EVEN MORE REASON to be excited because the majority of "die hard nationalists" don't live in the Central Belt, they live in the North East of Scotland which you would know if you looked at the SNP's election results.
