EDINBURGH - Online Information article about EDINBURGH
The old Royal Observatory on Calton Hill stands in 55 57' 23" N. and 12 43' o5" W. Edinburgh occupies a group of hills of moderate height and the valleys between.
This basaltic hill, the name of which is believed to commemorate the British king Arthur, who from its height is said to have watched the defeat of the Picts by his followers, is shaped like a lion couchant, with head towards the north.
The views of the city and environs from the castle or any of the hills are very beautiful, and it is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque capitals in the world.

CHAPEL HILL -- Architects stopped designing highly ornate Victorian railway stations near the end of the Victorian period, but Gordon Rutherford not only designed the world's newest one, he also built it with his bare hands.
The new station will be unveiled for the first time at the 13th annual Piedmont Miniatures Show and Sale at the Radisson hotel at 135 S. Main St. in High Point Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20-21.
The architect loosely modeled the station after the Wisconsin Central station in Fond du Lac, Wis. He modified the floor plan so that he would have room to build it in his workshop.

 Backtrack Volume 10
Economic background to railway mania: poverty, the Corn Laws, the Anti-Corn Law League, Chartism, accumulation of capital, poor return on industrial investments, railway dividends were relatively high, the Parliamentary beneficiaries (capitalists and landowners); the boom of 1836 had led to the creation of stock exchanges in Liverpool and Manchester, and others followed.
Station in joint ownership and connected to Normanton Hotel, initially independent venture, but Act of 28 June 1861 enabled MR to purchase on behalf of Joint Committee for a time the LNWR became part of the Joint Committee but later withdrew.
The station was enlarged in 1871 and the refreshment rooms, run by Spiers and Ponds were important in serving the MR Anglo-Scottish trains.

 General John Brown Gordon
Grady's stroke of genius was to persuade the B. Hill Monument Committee to invite Jefferson Davis to come to Atlanta after delivering an address in Montgomery, the Confederacy's first capital.
Gordon's opposition to this movement was based on his belief that the formation of a third party would lead to the victory of the Republican Party, a party, he said was "conceived in passion, born of fanaticism and baptized in blood".
Gordon's wife showed that she was made of similar stuff when she rushed out into the street at Winchester to urge Gordon's retreating troops to go back and face the enemy.

What to See in England - Gad’s Hill (By Gordon Home)
Gad’s Hill had a peculiar fascination for Dickens, for it was on the highway there that he obtained his wonderful insight into the character and manners of the various tramps and showmen he portrays in his books.
A mile and a half from this ancient city with its cathedral and castle is Gad’s Hill Place, where the great author resided from 1856 till the day of his death in 1870.
His father, then living in Rochester, used to bring him to look at it, and used to tell the little fellow that if he grew up to be a clever man he might own that or another such house.

The Hougham/Huffam Family Tree Dec 2004 - pafn494 - Generated by Personal Ancestral File
We used to go to the railway station, my brother Bob and I in the evening about five o'clock and wait for the train when my Dad was coming home from work with his brothers.
I took piano lessons and had to practice that but when the "doodle bugs" or V rockets came later in the war my Mum stopped my lessons because I had to walk a long way up Brigadier Hill to my tutor and she was frightened I would get bombed.
Edmund Henry Bartlett was born on the 13th December 1905 in a terraced house in Canton Road, Enfield in the county of Middlesex.

 LODGE HILL & UPNOR RAILWAY
The story of the Lodge Hill and Upnor Railway begins in 1873 when a Manning Wardle 1ft 6in gauge locomotive named BURGOYNE was sent to the Royal Engineers at Upnor to assist in the construction of a light railway, which was to be known as the Chattenden and Upnor Railway.
This locomotive may have worked through to Lodge Hill during the period (1915 to 1919) it was at the Station, and so might the KLR locomotives until the KLR closed in 1940.
The railway was further extended about 1892 to a point just inside the west end of Lodge Hill enclosure.

A Collection of Word Oddities and Trivia
However, what Llanfair PG does have over other long place-names is that there is a town, in which several shops and the railway station proudly display the complete long version of the name.
According to The Book of Names by J. Hook, the longest place name in the U. may be NUNATHLOOGAGAMIUTBINGOI, the name of some dunes in Alaska, taken from Eskimo.
Dale Williams of New Zealand says that the Welsh placename is a nineteenth-century fabrication, adopted to look good on their railway place boards, whereas a Maori name for a hill in New Zealand is genuine and was in general use.
