Gorgo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gorgo is a 1961 British science fiction variation on Godzilla (with hints of King Kong).
The scientists examine Gorgo, and conclude that he is not yet an adult, and that his mother must be nearly 200 feet tall.
Gorgo's special effects are crude by contemporary standards, and are often mocked when the film is reviewed by modern fans.

Gorgophone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gorgo was born about 507 B.C. After her father's rather awful death she married his brother, Leonidas, who became king and was the hero of the battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. Like her namesake Gorgophone, Gorgo remarried another Spartan king, and spawned yet another.
Gorgo herself was renowned in Spartan legend, and it is curious that she bore the name that was so closely identified with the legendary Perseus and his daughter, who, if they really lived, pre-dated Gorgo by over seven centuries.
Plutarch's works contain a good deal on Gorgo, and she appears in a couple of Herodotus's anecdotes that emphasize her close ties with her father and his trust in her acuity of judgement.

Gorgo is put on display at Dorkin's (snicker) Circus in London, billed as the Eighth Wonder of the World.
The film has fine special effects, though the smaller scale buildings (Gorgo is about twice the size of the original Godzilla) don't crumble quite as convincingly as Eiji Tsubaraya's models.

 MusicGorgo
Gorgo’s orchestration is prominent in the brass, featuring up to 4 horns, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, and a tuba, as well as a healthy dose of organ and colorful effects from vibraphone, harp, and xylophone, something common in Lavagnino’s scores.
Interestingly, there is no oboe in Gorgo, and whether this was due to budgetary considerations or because this plaintive instrument might have added a bittersweet tinge to this otherwise positive score, we’ll probably never know.
Gorgo’s score was conducted by the esteemed Muir Mathieson, who provides the appropriate sense of grandeur.

 DVD Verdict Review - Gorgo
The creature, dubbed "Gorgo," is caught and is all the buzz throughout the London area.
Local scientists, however, determine that the giant Gorgo is actually an infant and is likely to be pursued and rescued by its mother, a creature certain to be ten times larger.
Most interesting in the overall narrative is the fact that the titular creature(s) are not enraged by radiation provoked by military prodding but, rather, are merely working on survival instinct upon being separated.

Gorgo hails from what may be the most unlikely of all countries of origin for this sort of movie-- it could best be described as the English Godzilla.
Then Ma Gorgo comes ashore and knocks down the Tower Bridge and Big Ben while paying almost no attention to the hundreds of tanks and infantrymen pouring ammo into her.
I’m not going to give away the ending, because Gorgo was, at the time, the only big rubber monster movie yet made that ended quite the way it does.

Dorkin (honestly; that's his name) answers the reference to "Gorgo as he's called--we don't know why," with mention of the Greek Gorgons, and bills the 65-foot creature as "the eighth wonder of the world" (tres Kong!) and "heavier than six elephants"--all for five shillings.
Despite the video box summary announcing that "Papa Gorgo comes thundering ashore," the film refers to the adult as "she"; so the one significant female in the film is a destructive menace.
The "Gorgo," as the video box declares, "is quite ferocious--except when he wiggles his ears." Actually, the thing lumbers, and generally moves and holds its arms in a manner strikingly reminiscent of Sammy Davis Jr.

In a contrast to the gay parenting storyline, Gorgo's even bigger parent turns up and smashes London in an attempt to get the young Gorgo back (the "monsters" are never vilified, nor are any of the humans: Greed is the only real villain here).
The correlation between the monster and the gay couple's respective attempts to form a family is touching and subtle, and it's a pretty advanced topic for a film made in 1961.
That the monster's claim of parenthood is more easily accepted than the gay couple's is a strong, cynical, sadly correct statement, but the happy ending (the Gorgo family return to the ocean and Joe, Sam and Sean end up together, although their future is ambiguous) is an hopeful one.
