GORGOPOTAMOS VIADUCT | NZETC   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The target was one of three railway viaducts in the Brallos Pass area, namely Gorgopotamos, Asopos and Papadia.
The force stopped at the source of the Gorgopotamos stream—three large springs flowing from the base of the cliffs—and was here split up into the prearranged teams.
Even before the Gorgopotamos party arrived in Greece, small bands had taken to the hills from which they carried out minor raids on the enemy.

Gorgopotamos is a village that worth a visit for the large history that it has for its rail bridge that you will find just outside the village.
Here the Greek resistance blow up the large bridge that connects two large slopes of the mount Iti on 24th November 1942 and delay the Germans to reach North Africa where the Allies were pressed by the Germans.
Gorgopotamos is only 7 km from Lamia and it has taken its name from the river that rolls right next to the village.

In the night of 25th November 2002, it will be sixty years since the Gorgopotamos bridge on the Brallos pass (Thermopylae) in Greece was blown up.
Twelve members of the Commonwealth army and 150 Greek freedom fighters, called andartes, carried out this spectacular feat at a time when Greece was occupied by German, Bulgarian and Italian troops.
The book found considerable resonance in these countries and was very positively reviewed because of "the objective and exciting description of the tragic events".

Zervas and Veloukhiotis regarded each other warily but were essentially forced to co-operate due to pressures from the local inhabitants of the area (whose 'hearts and minds' each group was trying to win over), and the refusal of each leader to let the other hog all the glory.
Reconnaissance of the three viaducts had been performed by Myers and it was decided that the Gorgopotamos viaduct would be the target of choice.
Myers and Woodhouse embarked on a crash course to train the EDES and ELAS troops on the use of the British weapons that they had brought with them, including the Sten Gun, a lightweight and rugged submachine that was popular with SOE agents.

In a documentary for the BBC in 1985, Operation Harling, CW explained his role in Greece, and the attack on the Gorgopotamos Bridge was re-enacted by the Greek Army.
It was decided, then, in October, to hit the Gorgopotamos Bridge, a curved structure that would be the most difficult to repair.
The success of Gorgopotamos inspired Myers and CW to plan another attack, this time on the Asopos Bridge, thought unapproachable, having a revolving searchlight that covered the ground around every 30 seconds.

The scale of their operations was always limited by lack of funds, military hardware, and, most unbelievably of all, by the continual sniping that the SOE suffered from jealous rival special forces, and the sneering suits in Whitehall.
Despite such difficulties, however, their range of operations was impressive: from Gorgopotamos in Greece to Bergen in Norway they did indeed do their very best to set Europe ablaze, with what few resources they had, and faced certain torture and death if they were caught.
Their greatest impact was in the Balkans, supporting Tito and his partisans against the Germans, but here, as ever in the Balkans, things were always complicated by ethnic rivalries and atrocious massacres of civilians.

Since the recent construction of a road connecting Plikati with the outside world, the younger generations have left the village in search of employment and, as a result the practice of cutting leafy hay is coming to an end.
The inhabitants of Gorgopotamos, a village three miles south and 300 meters lower in elevation, which has been connected to the road for longer, have long since given up this practice, but there is plenty of evidence in the valley for widespread shredding in the past.
Oaks of this kind are to be found throughout the Gorgopotamos Valley.

This is not the fascinating story of the blowing up of the massive Gorgopotamos bridge either.

The Gorgopotamos operation was to prove the only instance of co-operation under a unified command between ELAS and EDES during the occupation.
At best relations between the two organizations were uneasy, at worst they degenerated into internecine fighting, as ELAS sought to consolidate its hold over all resistance activity with an eye to the inevitable power struggle on liberation.

Christopher Woodhouse, the head of Britain's military mission in Nazi-occupied Greece and a prolific historian who focused on the Mediterranean ally he once served in, died on Tuesday at his home in Oxford.
The highlight of his military activity in wartime Greece was the 1942 Gorgopotamos Bridge sabotage -- which resulted in a temporary interruption of German supply lines to Rommel's Afrika Corps -- the pre-eminent example of joint action by rival partisan groups operating in the country.
Woodhouse remained a diehard friend of Greece after the war, often visiting the country.

Of course, elements had to be updated and certain liberties taken, but in the end I came up with something that I was pretty happy with and at the same time learned a few neat tricks about the mission editor that I'd like to pass on to you, the gentle reader.
For those who haven't read my article on the Gorgopotamos raid (shame on you!), British and Greek resistance forces attacked the Italian garrisons of the Gorgopotamos rail bridge from both sides.

A day later, German troops executed 14 people at the site of the destroyed bridge in an act of reprisal.
