  'Gorillas in the Mist'
The role she plays in "Gorillas in the Mist" is that of the world-famous primatologist Dian Fossey, who gave up her work as a physical therapist and for 13 years -- before she was murdered in her sleep in 1985 -- devoted herself to the study of the mountain gorillas of Rwanda.
The chief problem with "Gorillas in the Mist" is that it banalizes its heroine; it turns her into one of us.
"Gorillas in the Mist" isn't a terrible film, but it is a frustrating one, and you can't help but feel betrayed by how the filmmakers have served their subject.

While the character of Ellen Ripley in the "Alien" movies were certainly Sigourney Weaver’s most famous and successful roles, her portrayal of sociologist Dian Fossey in "Gorillas In The Mist" was clearly the most remarkable and respectable one in her entire career.
Weaver was in fact sitting right next to the silverback gorilla when he came running at her through the thick bushes of the forest.
Although "Gorillas In The Mist" contains a very good music score, which is very sparingly used throughout the movie, the film is living on the engrossing ambient sounds it captures from the wildlife.

`Gorillas in the Mist" tells us what Dian Fossey accomplished and what happened to her, but it doesn't tell us who she was, and at the end that's what we want to know.
Fossey was a woman of average achievement and no particular scientific background, but she loved animals and she was deeply disturbed by reports that the mountain gorillas of central Africa were being threatened with extinction.
I left "Gorillas in the Mist" feeling cheated, somehow, as if the story had no more insight into Fossey than she apparently had into herself.

The census of the Virunga Volcanoes mountain gorilla population has found that the animals have increased their numbers by 17 percent since 1989, according to conservation authorities in Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and WCS scientists.
Participants recorded data on all gorilla nests and other signs, which were then used to establish the current estimate of 380 gorillas.
These are the animals made famous by the film "Gorillas In The Mist," about the long term research of Dr. Dian Fossey in the 1970s and 1980s, a time when the gorilla population declined due to poaching and habitat loss.
