		The Jewish cemetery at Gorinchem, located on the present-day Willem de Vries Robbéweg, was probably already in use as early as 1796, although it was not officially purchased by the community until 1814.
		During the peak years of Jewish life in Gorinchem, the community maintained voluntary organizations including a burial society, a society for aiding the poor, a religious association, and a society for the upkeep of the interior of the synagogue.
		The Jewish cemetery at Gorinchem was restored in 2000 and is currently maintained by the municipality.

		Men neemt aan dat Gorinchem is ontstaan doordat vissers en boeren rond het jaar 1000 een nederzetting stichtten op wat hoger gelegen land nabij een monding van de Linge in de Merwede.
		Gorinchem ("Goriks Heem") wordt het eerst genoemd in een document uit 1224 waarin Floris IV de Gorcumers de tolvrijdom in het gehele graafschap Holland bevestigt.
		In de 16e eeuw waren de stadsmuren zo verzwakt dat zij werden vervangen door een nieuwe vestingwal met elf bastions, die nog bijna volledig intact is. De nieuwe wal werd in 1609 afgerond en lag een stuk verder uit het centrum waardoor de stad tweemaal zo groot werd.

		De Werkgroep Archeologie Gemeente Gorinchem bestaat sinds 1995, en is, in tegenstelling tot wat de naam doet vermoeden, geen traditionele archeologische werkgroep, zoals we die in een aantal andere steden in ons land kennen, maar een gemeentelijk overlegorgaan, met als belangrijkste doelstelling archeologie in Gorinchem te promoten.
		Dit terwijl Gorinchem juist een zeer rijke historie heeft.De afgelopen 10 jaar hebben wij ons voornamelijk beziggehouden met het initiëren en begeleiden van archeologisch onderzoek op bedreigde locaties, het publiceren en tentoonstellen van resultaten, de bescherming van locaties met bijzondere archeologische waarde en de restauratie en conservering van bodemvondsten.
		Dankzij de enorme inzet van een groot aantal vrijwilligers die de archeologie in Gorinchem een warm hart toedragen, was het mogelijk een aantal projecten te realiseren.

		One of the oldest buildings in Gorinchem is the former Heilige Geest- or Sint Nicolaaskapel ('Chapel of the Holy Spirit' or 'Chapel of Saint Nicholas' respectively).
		At least, the tower is, as this is the only surviving part of the chapel which was build around the year 1300 and demolished in 1835.
		The original building dated from 1838 and from 1867 was dedicated to the martyrs of Gorcum, a group of 19 monks from Gorinchem who were tortured and murdered because of their faith by protestant pirates in 1567.
