Gorkha was a feudal hill village in what is now western Nepal, the village from which the Gurkha takes its name.
As the Gorkha kingdom expanded eastward across the Himalayas to Sikkim, the king's warriors, taken from all groups in the area, came to be known as Gurkha soldiers.
The 1/3 Gorkha Rifles was raised on April 24, 1815 near Almora as Kumaon Battalion by Lt Sir Robert Colquhuon.

During the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, Gorkha continued a slow expansion and appeared increasingly often as an ally of one or more of the three kingdoms in their quarrels with each other, giving the rulers of the hill state experience in the affairs of the Kathmandu Valley.
The Gorkhas moved on to Patan in 1767, but their attention was diverted by the appearance of a 2,400-man expeditionary force sent by the British East India Company to aid the traditional kings of the valley.
The Gorkhas were poised for greater adventures, but by then they were irritating bigger players and began to encounter resistance to their ambitions.

History of modern Nepal is said to have begun in 1768 A.D. (1825 B.S.) with Gorkha rulers their successful unification of petty states, the year when Prithvi Narayan Shah, the great King of Nepal, conquered the kingdom of Kathmandu and transferred his capital from Gorkha to Kathmandu.
He initiated to expand the territory of the kingdom invading to his neighboring kingdoms like Lamjung, Tanahuhn, Makwanpur, Nuwakot etc. He had brave courageous and expert courtiers, with such a strong army; he was able to defeat Jay Prakash Mall and sat on the throne of Kathmandu on 25 December 1768 (13th Ashwin 1825).
His son, Bahadur Shah annexed the rest small kingdoms in the east, south, and west during the r rule of Rana Bahadur Shah.
