Topic: Gornemant

In the News (Sun 3 Jun 12)

Chrétien de Troyes (Chretien) Perceval Summary
He encounters a gentleman in ermine, Gornemant of Gohort, and they converse.
Gornemant advises Perceval to not be too talkative or prone to gossip, to find a maiden or woman whom he can console, and to go to church, and not to claim publicly that he was taught by his mother.
A maiden brings in a grail held in both hands [for Chrétien, it is a serving dish], and the room becomes brightly illuminated [presumably because of the contents of the grail].

Gornemant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He is mentioned in a few early romances, but achieves prominance in Chrétien de Troyes' Perceval, the Story of the Grail, where he instructs the young hero in the ways of knighthood.
Percival is a quick learner when it comes to combat, but he does not know how to behave like a knight, so Gornemant tells him not to ask so many of his naive questions, hoping to make the boy look like less of a Welsh hick.
Gornemant's niece is Blanchefleur, who Percival later marries after successfully defending her city against attackers.

 The Fisher King
In the skirmishes that follow the youth distinguishes himself as a formidable opponent, but he is so obtuse regarding chivalrous behavior that his opponents are never quite sure whether he is right in the head.
After a time he comes to the castle of a man named Gornemant, who knights him after teaching him how to behave and how to properly manage his lance, shield, and sword.
Gornemant further warns Perceval not to talk too much, as it is unbecoming for a knight to chatter.

"A la guise de Gales l'atorna": Maternal Influence in Chrétien'sConte du Graal Debora B. Schwartz
Because Perceval's mother does not want him to be a knight, and since his initial attempt to follow her teaching, the encounter with the Tent Maiden, is such an unmitigated disaster, it might seem that the boy's trajectory toward exemplary knighthood is necessarily a movement away from maternal influence.
Indeed, Gornemant de Gohort, who teaches him to bear arms and, by fastening a spur on his foot, symbolically knights him, not only strips him of the unknightly Welsh clothing provided by his mother, but forbids him to acknowledge her influence openly.
Gornemant is an integral part of the value system represented by the Arthurian court.

Perceval met Lord Gornemant of Gohort, who offered him lodging and taught him about courtly manner and some skills on how to use the armour and weapons he carry.
Gornemant gave him many advices, including not talking too much, or else people would him for a fool.
Though, Perceval was curious about the spear that bleed and the Grail, he heeded Gornemant's warning of not talking too much and kept silence.

 The Grail Legend
Though his curiosity was aroused by the spectacle and he wanted to ask about what he had seen, he however held his tongue, always calling to mind what he had been taught by the old knight, Gornemant, who had warned him against loquaciousness.
This king, called the fisher king because he regularly fishes, is infirm having been wounded some say in a javelin battle in the thighs or as in some versions as a result of his sins when he looked with lustful eye upon the female worshipper, with the lance spontaneously falling upon him as mentioned above.
Chrétien's Gornemant became Wolfram's Gurnemanz, the knight who trained Parsifal in the art of arms, and the loathsome lady of Chrétien became Kundrie.

And the consequence of this is that the fisher king is not healed, he would have been had Perceval asked whet the procession meant.

Stunned by the beauty of what he is seeing and also mindful of Gornemant's warning not to ask unneeded questions, Perceval fails to ask the important question of what the ceremony means, an omission that will have disastrous consequences not only for him but for Britain as well.

Geoffrey of Monmouth or Wace might have supplied some of the names, but neither author mentioned Erec, Lancelot, Gornemant and many others who play an important role in Chrétien's narratives.
One is forced to guess about Latin or French literary originals which are now lost, or upon continental lore that goes back to a Celtic source.
