Gortyn, or Gortys as it was called in ancient times, was the most important Roman town on Crete, but its origins go back to the end of the Bronze Age.
Tradition holds that the town owes its name to the hero, Gortys, who according to some was the son of Rhadamanthys, the brother of Minos, and to others was the son of Tegeates.

On the way, I saw a man dressed in his Sunday best; the full traditional Kreten costume of pantalones, high fl boots, and a fl cap with netting.
Gortys is a very small village which would never lead one to think that this had once been the main city in Krete during Roman times.
