Goryokaku fort, a special histrical site at Hakodate City on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, was Japan's first and largest Western-style fort.
It was built in 1866 to house government offices for the administration in Hakodate and to deal with commerce and foreign affairs related to the port of Hakodate that opened to international trade in 1859.
There are five V-shaped projections from a central core and it was named Goryokaku (Pentagram Fort) in reference to its star shape.

One of the famous churches is the Trappistine Convent building, Japan´s first Catholic church established by eight nuns sent from France in 1898.
Star-shaped Fort Goryokaku was the first castle fort introduced that was built in western-style construction in 1862.
Because of its star-shape, it is called Goryokaku, or Pentagon Fort.

During the winter they fortified their defences around the southern peninsula of Hakodate, with the new fortress of Goryokaku at the center.
Imperial forces soon consolidated their hold on mainland Japan, and in April 1869 dispatched a fleet and an infantry force of 7,000 to Ezo.
The Imperial forces progressed swiftly and won the Naval Battle of Hakodate, until the fortress of Goryokaku was surrounded with 800 remaining men.

Goryokaku castle was created in 1964, and the matter that 100 years passed was commemorated, and the Goryokaku tower was built.
A view room is set up in 45m from the ground of the tower of the height 60m, and the whole aspect of the star form of Goryokaku can be seen from the tower.
And, it has an exhibition hall, a stand and a restaurant as an annex in the tower, too.

Fort Goryokaku, meaning 'pentagonal' from its star shape, was constructed in Hakodate from 1857 to 1864 as Japan's first Western style fortress.
In 1868, when the Meiji Restoration led to the overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate, loyalist rebels fled to Hokkaido and used Fort Goryokaku as their headquarters in the resulting civil war against the Imperial forces.
The rebels intention was to declare the establishment of an independent country to be known as the "Republic of Ezo".

First I headed for the Goryokaku Park in the north of the city.
I understand pentagonal castles and forts were popular in Europe in the Middle Age when frequent battles were fought because it is advantageous in defense.
I climbed to the observation deck in the 60-meter tall Goryokaku Tower standing next to the park.

Afterwards with a quick tram ride I arrived at the great Goryokaku, a star-shaped fortress built in Hakodate first for defense, and later becoming the site of a revolution.
Goryokaku was far from Hokadate, and also far from even Goryokaku station.
At Goryokaku everyone was amazed how I got my train ticket routing wrong from Hakodate to Sapporo.

We went to a Chinese buffet on the second floor of a hotel in the Goryokaku area.
After a torturous lunch during which mom smoked a hell of a lot, I learned that the family from hell was going to the park with us, so on our way out, I told the dork, Anthony, that I was going home.
There is a JR station called "Goryokaku", but it is apparently no where near the actual area.

The star known as “Goryokaku” is actually the first Western-style fort built in Japan from 1857-64.

Goryokaku Park: To defend against attacks from the north, Fort Goryokaku was built by the Tokugawa shogunate in 1866 in a western style, its five pointed star shape was designed to maximize crossfire on the enemy and minimize blind spots.

We got to the park around 5:30 and she bought tickets for the tower.
The deal with Goryokaku Park is that it is the remains of the first Western-style fort in Japan.
