Gangwon was one of the Eight Provinces of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty.
In 1895, Gangwon was replaced by the Districts of Chuncheon (Chuncheon-bu; 춘천부; 春川府) in the west and Gangneung (Gangneung-bu; 강릉부; 江陵府) in the east.

The man, identified only as Hwang, crossed the eastern part of the Northern Limit Line (NLL), a controversial inter-Korean sea border, aboard his 3.9-ton vessel Wednesday afternoon, the JCS said, adding that the ship had no other passengers.
The JCS was reportedly conducting investigation over the cause of Hwang's defection, suggesting he might have gone to the DPRK to visit his relatives there.

on December 13, a Navy patrol plane discovered a DPRK vessel drifting 28 miles off the coast of Goseong County, Gangwon Province.
A patrol boat set out for the site at around 2:30 a.m., and returned to Seokcho at around 9:40 a.m., towing the DPRK ship.
