In Byeongsan Villiage, Shimsan-myeon, Goseong County, South Gyeongsang Province, a town not far from a copper mine that was used since the Japanese colonial period and shut down several decades ago, the blood and urine of seven villagers tested positive for levels of cadmium far surpassing the World Health Organization¡¯s limits.
The seven were only those who volunteered for tests administered by environmental groups; when one considers how half of the 300 villagers complain of crooked bones, broken bones and pains, there is a high possibility that they are afflicted with itai-itai disease.
We must also form an investigative body, composed of the relevant government bureaus, specialized medical personnel and environmental groups, to investigate not just Goseong, but villagers living near closed mines across the country and the agricultural goods produced near those mines and discover the causes of the disease and come up with countermeasures.
