A team of 40 in Gosford City Council's environment planning unit, set up three years ago to independently assess development applications, has been disbanded and its staff moved to other departments, in a move green groups have described as a sop to developers.
The council's decision to cull its departments from seven to five and terminate the position of environment planning director comes at a time when there is substantial development afoot in the shire, including the Outrigger Beach Resort due to open in June and a proposed nine-storey complex, both at Ettalong Beach.
A former Gosford City councillor, Geoff Preece, said it was disappointing the council was reversing an earlier decision based on advice from the consultants KPMG to establish an environment body independent of the council's development units.
