		The horse racing industry was probably originally brought to Goshen by the Smith family of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York in the early 18th Century known as the "Horseblock Smith's" after whom one of the main thuroughfares of Central Long Island is named: Horseblock Road.

	History - Goshen Fire Department
		On April 18, 1843, the Village of Goshen was officially chartered by the Albany legislature.
		Goshen needed to replace the Metamora with a new engine, and on November 9, 1855, the Village Board authorized the purchase of a new engine.
		Goshen needed to improve its fire coverage on the other side of the Erie Railroad tracks, and on September 12, 1873, this became a reality with the formation of the Dikeman Hose Company Number 3.

	Goshen
		NORTHWEST from New York City, distant by rail sixty miles from Jersey City, sixteen miles in an air line west from the Hudson River in the center of the County of Orange, of which it is one of the County Seats, is situated the village of Goshen.
		The village remained under the charter of 1843, until 1878, when by a vote of the inhabitants it was decided to abandon the old charter, and organize under the General Act.
		The village is supplied with water from Prospect Lake, a reservoir being constructed covering some thirty acres, which is at a sufficient elevation to supply water by direct pressure, obviating the necessity of pumping.

		Historic Goshen, bearing a biblical name, Goshen, dating from 1714, retains only slightly evidence of its physical beginnings but its historic role as a center or county government dates from 1727 when it became a half-shire town for Orange County as it was then laid out.
		Under the new dispensations of state government, the Town of Goshen (which included Chester and Sugarloaf) was established in 1789, and in 1798 Goshen became the County Seat, a role it still fills.
		The Village of Goshen, however, was not incorporated until 1809.
