The settlement at Plymouth began with the landing of the Pilgrims, 22 December 1620; the Colony of Massachusetts Bay was established under John Endicott at Salem in 1628.
In 1905 the ratio of increase in the native and in the foreign-born of the population was 6.46 per cent and 8.47 per cent respectively; the number of native-born in the total population being 2, 085,636, and that of the foreign-born being 918,044, an increase of the latter of 459.7 per cent since 1850.
Massachusetts, as well as new York and Philadelphia, experienced the storm: a convent was burned, churches were threatened, monuments to revered heroes of the Church were razed, and cemeteries descrated.

In Gosnold’s mind, the ideal spot for such a settlement was at a bay discovered and glowingly described by Giovanni da Verrazzano, a Florentine explorer who had sailed along America’s east coast in 1523-24.
Gosnold was said to be the first European to see and set foot on Cape Cod, which received its name for its great quantity of codfish, and built a small fur trading station there.
Gosnold had shown the way to the New England coast, even though he did not receive fame for it, and he took no credit for the event.

The history of Gosnold also differs from other cities and towns, since the clustered chunks of land were so small they were usually not named separately in the grants and sales of the properties of the New World, but changed owners attached to one or another vast holding.
In 1688 a permanent settler in Gosnold, Ralph Earle Jr., built his house, the first of a small, hardy island population, while Captain Kidd anchored in one of Gosnold's harbors in 1699 just before he was captured for piracy.

Excavations in Massachusetts reveal that the earliest human inhabitants arrived about 3,000 years ago.
The first European mention of Native Americans dates from about 1500 A.D. The Native Americans in Massachusetts were mostly from the Algonquian Nation; tribes included the Massachuset, Nauset, Nipmuc, Pennacook, Pocumtuc, and Wampanoag.
The following year a royal charter was granted to the Massachusetts Bay Company, to promote the settlement of the territory "from sea to sea" that had been granted to the Puritans, and to govern its colonies.

Bartholomew Gosnold, with about 20 colonists, built a storehouse on the rocky islet in what is now called "Gosnold's Pond," in Cuttyhunk, in the spring of 1602; but discontent arising, the settlement was soon abandoned.
Gosnold called the enclosing island "Elizabeth," in honor of the reigning queen; which name has been extended to the whole group.
These islands were long a part of the town of Chilmark, but were incorporated as the town of Gosnold, March 17, 1864.
