Gospa (1995)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Gospa is a nice little low budget movie which tells the true story of six children seeing visions of the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje (perhaps one of the most controversial miracles) circa 1981.
Still, millions of Catholics come to the small church by the day to watch the children talk to the Virgin Mary, concerning the government.
Overall, Gospa is a well-made film, but not for those who expect to see Mary in big white clouds, or the sun falling from the sky or any other kind of miracle in the optical sense, but rather in the sense of human conflict, ending in the protection of the faith.

Many of these people claim spiritual and emotional healing due to the "Gospa" or because one of the "seers" prayed over them...many more insist that they owe their renewed Catholic fervor is itself a fruit attributable to the "Gospa" and/ or contact with the seers themselves.
The fruits that the "Gospa" of Medjugorje has borne to those closest to her have little to do with Christian notions of conversion and penance, and much to do with values so prized by the New Age: self-esteem, self-realization, guiltlessness, the enjoyment of the abundant life.
On one occasion, the "Gospa" actually complains about "her" messages not being taken seriously enough:I don't wish to force anyone to do that which he neither feels nor desires, even though I had special messages for the parish by which I wanted to awaken the faith of every unbeliever.

The Blessed Mother has chosen each of them, not because they were more prayerful or pious than any other, but because she wished them to relay her messages to the world.

They are prayerful, unique individuals trying to live their lives under the watchful eye of the world as privately and devoutly as possible.

In this statement, the "Gospa" first reduces religious truth to a moral code, saying that the only difference among religions on earth is the fact that the adherents of some are more faithful to the commandments than others.

 Falsehoods on Film
From the religious title of the film "Gospa", a believer would expect a lot more religious content in the film: Marian and Mariological studies, or messages of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ.
Yet in the film, despite its title "Gospa", there is little said on Mary, the Mother of God.
A film which abuses the name of our Lady, which does not shy away from an incorrect and insulting presentation of the local Bishop, under a holy title, yet lacking religious culture, awakens in believers disappointment and does not merit the attention of the faithful!
